Xiaomi AX3600 or Asus RT-AX88U

Hello,

I am deciding to use either Xiaomi Ax3600 or Asus Rt-Ax88u to setup a mesh at home.

I know the Asus unit is very good but it is also almost double the price of the Xiaomi.
Do you guys think the xiaomi one is good enough or the Asus has a lot of pros over Xiaomi?

Many thanks.

  • I am waiting very patiently for a good deal on the ASUS RT-AX88U.
I haven't seen one in ages. So, I might bite the bullet soon. If you come across one during your research, let us know. :)

    • As I am no network expert, is the ASUS RT-AX88U really worth the premium or are we paying for features/gimmicks that we hardly use?

      • Check out some of the reviews, and similar product comparisons. :-)

  • I like the ax3600 a lot.

  • I've got two of the Ax3600 on order. They took 3 weeks to go from China to Australia and have been sitting at the Sunshine West Australia Post centre for nearly a month now. So apart from Australia Post being shit, I can't tell you what they are like.

Thing about mesh is, being half the price means a lot when you buy a few. I plan to get a third one if the first two work out ok.

When I ordered the mesh capability was not implemented but coming in a future firmware update. Just something to note. Haven't checked if it's implemented yet. Not much point without the router haha.

Xiaomi stuff is usually really high quality. And at $150~ a pop, hard to say no!

    • I checked with Gearbest people and was told the firmware update that supports mesh should be out end of Jun or early July. Since AX1800 got the update, AX3000 shouldn't be long.

Which store did you order from, Ali Express, Gearbest?

    • Hey mate, have you gotten your routers and tried the mesh setup? as
The stable version of the new firmware is out already.

Look forward to your reviews and comments as I am still sitting between Xiaomi and Asus.

      Cheers.

    • Hey Arty,

I am guessing you have received your AX3600 routers by now.

How did you go setting them up? A lot of the reviews claim that the web console only has Chinese localisation. The MI mobile apps have English language support, but a lot of the nitty gritty configuration items are missing.

  • i can confirm that the new firmware now allows you to set up mesh network.

Internet speed is similar with my old TP-LINK ARCHER, but with over a dozen devices connecting to the router, ax3600 handles much better than my old router, no constantly dropping out

the largest improvement is LAN streaming, video open instantly without any buffer(my previous TP-LINK buffers when streaming large files).

    • Thank you.

I order 2 of them already and can't wait to ditch the ADSL2+

  • AX3600 hands down. been getting constant updates and with each update, lots of new features. Speed is superb and so far very reliable. I've had mine for about 4 months now I think.

you can also check out this Singaporean forum (https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/internet-bandwidth-networ…).
lots of positive things to say about the xiaomi router, and some have even posted benchmarks and tests against more expensive routers like the asus you mention.

Make sure you turn on closed caption in youtube when you watch some of these reviews as they are in Mandarin.

    • Thank you for your info.

I think my devices are at the custom or something. According to the tracker, they transited Singapore on 1/08.

      • I am now considering the AX3600, as the RT-AX88U is either out of stock or over-priced where stock is available.
Any recommendations for where to buy the Xiaomi AX3600 for the current best price?

    • some have even posted benchmarks and tests against more expensive routers like the asus you mention.

I checked out the link you had posted above. I could not find any comparison between the Xiaomi AX3600 and Asus RT-AX88U.

Also, a lot of the reviews on AliExpress mention the following:

Product seems to have Chinese only localization.

It seems only the mobile app (which has very limited functionality) supports English (or Chinglish).

I ordered from this seller and reviews are good: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001033923816.html?spm=a2g0s…
Paid $397.16 for 2 units (with cat 6 cables) and 11-19 days shipping via EMS.

    • $400 for 2 units. Bargain! You cannot even buy 1 unit of RT-AX88U at that price.
Thanks for the link. Appreciate it.

Not a bad price. I went the cheapass route and did it via Taobao via their sea shipping. No GST.
      For 2 units: $216.15
      Sea Shipping: $32

      Total: $248.15 for 2 AX3600.

I ordered it early July. Tracking says it has arrived Australian Warehouse, so should be delivered to me within this coming week. Approx 5weeks shipping.

So if you are willing to wait, you can save more from going via Taobao.

      • @Iplau do you have a taobao link?

    • I wanted to purchase a couple of additional AX3600 routers taking advantage of the Black Friday sales coming up.
It looks like the Xiaomi TookFun Tech Store seller doesn't seem to offer the CAT6 cables any more.

  • They finally connect NBN for me this morning but I cannot get the xiaomi router to connect to the internet.

According to the instructions, it should auto detect and configure via the Miwifi on the browser.
Please advise if anyone has any idea.

    Many thanks.

    • Thanks for the warning.
If you do get it working one way or another, I would appreciate it if you could please let us know. TIA.

      • I think I have figured it out, the device is not vlan supported out of the box and with all the luck in the world, I have to use a rsp that requires vlan.
So the easiest way out is to switch to a RSP that does not use vlan in their setup.

Hope this helps others from making the same mistake.

        • Great to know.
Thank you so much for sharing. 👍

It looks like almost all RSPs do not require VLAN.

I am guessing you must be with TPG. 😭

          • @DoctorCalculon: I went with Future Broadband.

I think they have the most competitive plan for 100/40 and the process from enquiry to installation was smooth.
So going to call them today to see if there is a work around, otherwise I have no choice but to switch.

            • @leznix: Ok, I stop trying so switched RSP now I am getting awesome speed via the router.

              • @leznix: Thanks for the follow up message.
BTW, what RSP did you end up going with?

              • @leznix: Another question. How did you configure the AX3600 router? Did you use the web console or the MI app from the App Store / Play Store?
Is the MI app good enough, i.e. does it expose all the configuration settings?

                • +1

@DoctorCalculon: The admin portal will automatically load when you connect up the router to your PC or Mobile.

Click the next (blue button) and it will try to configure itself and typically will fail.
There is a little link below that brings you to the option page where you choose the type of connectivity you are after, PPPoEE, DHCP, Static, etc. For me, I just select DHCP and all connected in no time.

As mentioned, you do not need to download anything because the router will push the admin portal up. They are assuming users do not have internet access since the router has yet to be configured at this point, hence unable to download anything.

Of course if you want to download the miwifi app is fine too, there is an option "Configure new router“ in the app which is going through the same process。

                  Hope this helps.

  • Went to Superloop on 100/40 plan.

  • The desktop is now connected to the mesh node white the router is in another room, this is the planned setup when I bought the two xiaomi and here are the speed test result ran from the desktop:

    https://www.speedtest.net/result/10148959355.png

I would say no problem with the mesh connection.

    • I would say no problem with the mesh connection.

The differences in download and upload speeds with regard to a direct connection is almost negligible.
The increased latency with the mesh connection maybe an issue only if you are an avid online gamer.

BTW, any comments on the following question? 😃

The mesh connection is a just temporarily solution as my ancient desktop does not have wifi.
I did not want to buy a wifi dongle just for it because I have already bought a wifi 6 motherboard for a new system, just waiting for the the Ryzen 4000 cpu to be released.

  • @leznix

I wanted to setup two more AX3600 units using ethernet cables, and I want all the WiFi access points to have the same name — i.e. meshing over ethernet rather than WiFi.

Do you think if this is possible with the Xioami AX3600 units, or is this a bad idea?

    • I am not sure if it is possible to mesh using cables and probably not the best idea as you will have cables all over your house. The mesh in my house has been stable and I have not experienced any connectivity issue other than my cat tripping the power cord.

Once the mesh is formed, you should only see your wifi connection regardless how many routers in the mesh. Individual router names which I think it is irrelevant in this case unless you have certain plan for them.

      Hope this helps. Cheers.

  • Hey,

How is that Xioami AX3600 going? Any issues?

Currently using google wifi for my setup and considering either the Asus or Xioami.

    Many thanks

    • No issue what so ever for these past eight months, very happy. Perhaps Asus has more functions or features but dearer.
Also Xiaomi has new models, the AX6000 and AX9000

  • I am selling an almost new Xiaomi AX3600 in Melbourne.

    • What price you wanting for it?

Can I ask why you're selling it? They're an awesome router.. I'm actually interested in setting up the mesh network so yeah I'm keen

      • Sorry sold it last night for $90. I bought the Ax6000 and live in an apartment. Mesh wasn't needed.
