What Is The Cheapest UPS for NAS with USB Shutdown Support

I'm looking for the cheapest new UPS from an Australian store with support for USB shutdown to NAS.

I saw the CyberPower VALUE600EI for $89 at umart is there anything much cheaper?

  • Don’t go too cheap. Get something with a user serviceable battery and that is line interactive. If you go too cheap you’ll have to throw it out when the battery dies. Standby UPSs will use the battery more than line interactive UPSs too.

Read up on your particular NAS to check what models are supported.

I have found absolute bargains on eBay for UPSs. I got a true sine wave line interactive Eaton 1kva UPS for about $300 back a while ago.

    • The CyberPower VALUE600EI is line interactive but does not have user-replaceable batteries.

It's for a cheap NAS under $500 so just want something cheap that will do the job, how long will UPS battery last?

      • I've found UPS batteries last 3-5 years. The UPS unit will however outlast the battery many times over. VLRA replacement batteries are cheap to replace.

        • Well can I get a good NAS with replaceable batteries for $100.

      • I have the 600 and have replaced the batteries myself - can be done, just not as easy :)

  • There are a few around for under $100 with the features you want, e.g. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PSA-line-interactive-500VA-Mini-… The cheapies will usually give you enough time to immediately shutdown your equipment and prevent data loss. Don't expect it to run limitless electronic devices though, the more you protect, the quicker it will run out of backup power. They typically run a fairly common battery that is used for UPS's and burglar alarm panels, 12v@7Ah-9Ah. Some UPS's can take more than one battery but it will typically cost more. The batteries are good for anything up to about 5 years, but your mileage may vary — e.g. cheap batteries, excessive heat, lots of protection incidents…

    • That looks pretty decent but doesn't seem to support my NAS.

    • I'm looking for one as well. This looks like a good buy, thanks endotherm! But does anyone know if this will be compatible with my Synology DS918+ NAS?

  • I looked into this a couple of weeks ago for my unraid server. I settled on an Eaton because the whole range is supported by NUT (Network UPS Tools) - popular linux UPS tool. I was going to get a cyberpower because they are supposed to use the APC API, but had trouble finding stock on the size I wanted.

So I got the Eaton 5S1200LCD which has 2 years warranty (cyberpower was 1 year).

  • What I need is an Eaton, CyberPower or other major brand with USB support and replaceable battery.

Can I find this under $100 locally, capacity doesn't need to be much.

  • When I was asking advice from friends who had been using UPS's for years, they said:

    • Make sure it has Pure Sine Wave
    • Online Double Conversion is good, but not necessary
    • All those things might be good but the prices get ridiculously inflated and unfeasible for the value of the products I'm trying to protect.

  • hi some brands tell you the battery isnt replaceable but they actually are. I think the reason they say this is because you have to open the case and there is voltage inside !

My old Belkin 1400VA unit has 2 replaceable batteries but you need a longer than usual screwdriver (I found one at Daiso for $2!)

  • I"m also interested to see what other suggestions people have in 2020 (given inflated pricing vs a year ago).
