Personal Alarms for Elderly Living Alone

Hello fellow ozbargainers,

I am looking in getting my elderly father a Personal alarm as he is diabetic and lives alone.

I was wondering if anyone had any first hand experiences with any of these companies, which ones I should be staying away from and which ones you would personally recommend.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and reply,
I appreciate the help.

    LiveLife.
You cannot get wrong with this one and make sure you register your dad within My Aged Care if you have not done it already.

    • Awesome, Will be doing that today. Thanks!

If you're buying second-hand, I would avoid buying the medical alarm device from this story. It might be cursed.

    • I appreciate the heads up!

I have an elderly relative set up with a Nokia 2720 Flip

It has an emergency dial button on the side and it they hold it it auto dials multiple contacts

Another has a care alert smart dialer set up to an nbn land line - works the same way but only if they are at home

    • Thats actually a great idea, Nokias are known to be indestructable as well so if he drops it hopefully it'll hold up, the tiles on the other hand…

I’ve got one of these and I love it. I haven’t had to use the fall function, yet, but it is nice to have the phone on my wrist if something happens. My other half’s mother had a stroke and was unable to get up off the floor for 1/2 a day. It was only when someone came by she managed to get someone’s attention.

have you ever tested it to see how intelligent it is re detecting a fall?

Not to date. I’ve been slack so I haven’t set that up yet. However, this spurs me to test.

Dogs work well too. Make sure they can get out through a flap so they can alert the neighbours. They can work great as a primary or backup solution, and aged people w pets become happier, get better and live longer.

A well trained dog needing a new home from the pound is often possible, and can work out the same or less than the up-front cost of some solutions, and/or the monthly cost of others.

    • Thanks for the idea!
Unfortunately my father isn't a pet kind of person though, otherwise having a cute and fluffy addition to the family would have made visits a hell of a lot cuter.

I know people are often more motivated to post reviews when they're dissatisfied than satisfied, but a quick read of online reviews is enough to turn anyone off.

    • Cheers for the recommendation, I'll look into it.

You may want to give Australian Red Cross a call and inquire

    • Will do! Thanks for the tip
