Need a Laptop Mainly for Study Purposes but Some Gaming Too (Budget $1500)

Hi everyone,

I need a laptop at the moment mainly for studying, watching lectures, browsing internet etc, but I also want to use it for some gaming (games such as iRacing, Assetto Corsa).

What would you recommend I get?

Thank you in advance

Ben

  • Budget?
Personally I've been waiting a while for something around $1250 but might go pickup something from renewd

    • Sorry should have included this in the description - around the $1500 mark

Or the 4600H model which can be had for $1300 when on sale. Best bang for bucks gaming laptop and better screen than TUF A15.

    • Can you buy direct from Dell or are there better prices via eBay?

      • Prices are usually more affordable through Ebay with 20% off, but prior to that deal, Dell's website had the 4800H model for $1620 after cashback.

    • I'm still kicking myself I missed that day. Does Dell Ebay have sales regularly?

  • I got a Dell G3 3590 for around $1500-00 12 months ago from JB.Same model should be a few hundred cheaper now has some gaming specific features which I never use. Not a very portable laptop though weights a ton.

what kind of study do you do?
this might affect your laptop requirement.

    • Just uni study so require Microsoft office package and that’s about it

      • So not something like Interior Design or Software Engineering then, which would require a higher specced laptop?

Nope - bachelor of commerce so spreadsheets/word etc

        • @kerfuffle what would you recommend for a higher specced laptop?

          • @wuahhh:

            • intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 6 processor or higher
            • 16GB RAM, minimum
            • 2GB or higher GPU
            • 512GB SDD or higher
            • @kerfuffle: Thanks, any particular laptop you would recommend?

              • @wuahhh: Well I just got a Surface Laptop 3 myself with all the above specs (bar the GPU; I highly doubt mine has 2GB), but whether you want to drop almost $3500 (RRP) on it is another thing. Probably best to Google laptop brands you like and see whether they have anything that matches the above.

  • What’s this like ? Could it be used for gaming ? https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/new-inspiron-15…

Get this one, it's currently on sale at $1528, or the 120Hz screen one at $1799 if you deem that important. Not the best price ever but way better than the Inspiron 15 in every aspect beside portability. There is a chance the Inspiron throttle while gaming due to the small form factor.

  • Does anyone have a suggestion for a higher spec laptop for architectural purposes? Around the same budget. Prefer a Nvidia GPU. Cheers guys.
