Where to Buy Cheap Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Installation Disc?

Hi,
I have a desktop PC (approx. 5 years old) that I haven't used in the last 2 years. I'm looking to buy an SSD as the main drive and follow an upgrade path to Windows 10. I previously installed Windows 8.1 Upgrade Discs with a non-genuine Windows 7, which gave me hassles when I tried the upgrade. At the time, I 'borrowed' a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate to overcome this, but ideally would like to purchase my own copy. eBay has them available, but they're $100+ (in which case I may as well buy Windows 10). If you have any suggestions about where else I could obtain a genuine version from then this would be appreciated. If helpful, I work in the Education field.
Thanks

  • Can't you download the version off EDU Star or Dream Spark/Imagine. Note: Window 7 is also no longer supported in terms of updates.

Apologies but just being clear here, are you looking for the installation disk, or are you looking for a genuine key/registration? Also definitely worth checking your employer if you're in education, I got a windows 10 education edition (I think its similar to enterprise) for free as a student at my uni but I imagine others are similar.

    • Ideally looking for installation disk. I am aware that I can get a Windows 10 Education Edition, but my understanding is that this needs to be installed at my workplace, rather than downloading it and then installing it from USB. It then needs to authenticate the installation (again at workplace) otherwise it won't be activated.

      • For me I was provided with a Education key, I then just went to the key code area of my computer and added it there, took a second or two to check and then has been fine since. I didn't go into a workplace or uni, hopefully its still the same.
The disk itself can be downloaded directly from windows and installed onto USB or burnt to disk.

Well I can't help with that but I genuinely want to help you.

Is the end goal just to install a registered / activated version of windows 10 on the SSD on your desktop?

I ask because I believe you are making it more complex than it needs to be.

    • Agree that it is slightly more complex, but I'm trying to avoid the need to physically take my computer into my workplace, install Windows 10 and then constantly get it activated. I will admit, that this was the previous suggestion when I asked 2 years ago, so things may have changed. I don't think I have access to EDU Star or Dream Spark/Imagine (No Username, are you able to say which states this is applicable to, I live in SA).

      • EDU Star is only a VIC thing but SA should have something similar, you can ask your IT what portal they use for software catalogs. In terms of Dream Spark/Imagine your education institute has to be enrolled with Microsoft for access. Once granted access use your employee login and you should be able to download anything from Microsoft. This includes all edition of windows, server and SQL as well as Office 2020.

  • You want a genuine W7 installation disk but don't want to pay the full price for it?

Microsoft no longer sells W7 disks so maybe look around for a dead computer with W7 on it and attempt to get licence transferred. It works sometimes through a phone call to Microsoft.

    • As already mentioned above, it's a no longer supported version of Windows, so prices shouldn't reflect Windows 10 prices. If people are selling it, it's because they no longer have it installed on their computer or any use for the installation media.

  • I know this is an obvious question, but… Have you ever had a legitimate install of Win 7 on that computer?

If so, you can download the install disc from Microsoft and you computer already has a digital licence.

If not, I'd consider buying a $100-200 computer from ebay that already has a digital licence and may be faster than your old machine

    • Hi,
Yes I did end up with a legitimate install of Win 7 on the computer.

  • Can't you just extract the key from the existing HDD using a keygen extractor, and then use that to activate a copy of windows 7/8.1 etc from digitalriver? Assuming you didn't build the pc and it came originally with an OEM windows install on the existing mechanical HDD?

Is there some reason you want a 'genuine disk' as opposed to a 'genuine key' to activate it? The format isn't critical for the software, it's the validation key that's the key as it were. Speak to your Uni's IT department they'll show you what you need, always best to clean install Win10 if that's the end game than win7/8.1/10.

  • Just get Win10, Win7 is like buying a flatscreen

  • A Windows 10 serial is like $10 from the german ebay (ebay . de). Just create a bootable USB using Windows 10 creation tool on another PC or the ISO + Rufus.

    • so thats where they went. I remember buying them for $8 last year from our ebay now its gone way up

Get win 10, you dont even need to activate it do use it.

  • Like nutrino said. Download a genuine win10 from Microsoft and use for free.

I've been using the Windows ISO downloader for years now.

    https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/6…

It downloads images from Microsoft official Tech bench servers — because Digital River has been retired.

This may be off topic, but Windows 7 is no longer officially supported. You should be downloading W10 instead, if you use the PC on a daily basis you really shouldn't be using non-supported OS's because of how many undiscovered vulnerabilities an old OS has.

    • Thanks for the link and the advice. Definitely will take it on board and give this a go first. Will all depend on comparability with SSD and motherboard as to whether I take the easy route or the hard one.
