Starward Nova / Wine Cask Whisky $69.75 (RRP $95) C&C / + Delivery @ Dan Murphy's (or Amazon AU Backorder)

600

Starward NOVA is uniquely Australian, crafted exclusively with local wine barrels for maturation resulting in a Whisky with balanced aromas of raisins, bananas and a touch of balsamic lead to clove, toffee and nougat. The palate is filled with red berries, hints of cinnamon and a variety of savoury and spice driven notes. A long, dry and tannic finish guides a strong linear reach through the palate, balancing a generous roundness and oiliness of the spirit.

This is actually really good. Bought a second bottle recently on the 20% off Dan's eBay special.

Don't be scared off by the NAS.

    • I've tried a few starward. I'm surprised by your comment. None of them have been any good imho

Have you tried it? It's sub standard

          • @justtoreply: Have you tried this particular starward? The others at a lower price point might not be as good as this offering.

I'm usually very sceptical of NAS whiskey, and I would imagine their cheaper offerings are not as good as this.

            Which ones have you tried?

            • @ozbjunkie: Their initial few releases, circa 2016/17ish iirc. I've had hundreds of whiskies, so I don't remember the names.

It's so rough I no longer visit their booth at whisky events.

$65 doesn't get you anything better though.

@justtoreply: Yeah I'd agree $65 doesnt get much better than this (except maybe the Laphroaig 10 or Ardbeg 10 on 20% off, but they're for different tastes entirely).

Might have been a younger release you were unsatisfied with, though I admit I'm not familiar with Starward's history.

I picked up a Kilchoman 3rd edition a number of years back (only a few years aged) and it was a bit rough but showed promise as a new Islay distillery, and I've recently picked up the Sanaig and the other non-sherry cask, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that distillery has come along over the years.

                Happy dramming bud.

    • Agree - a smooth whisky that is perfect neat or with ice to allow the complex flavours to come out. Well worth a try especially at this price.

Comments from the Peated Perfection website (who only gave it a 3 out of 5 but thought it a great whisky nevertheless):

This is in my opinion the best value for money you can find in Australian whisky. It punches way above its weight, easily beating many others that are twice the price (or more), and absolutely decimates those that are a similar price. I think David & the team behind New World / Starward should be commended for their success, and for doing exactly what they set out to do, and I can't wait to see what they come up with in the future. If you're yet to take the plunge on a bottle of Starward, I definitely recommend giving it a go. Enjoy!

I always reckon ice is to make goon taste less hash. A good drum should be drank at body temperature, so a dash of water is good and nursing it in hand is better (pun or not?)
All those reviews say a booze is smooth, sounds like they drink harsh goon often and expecting drinks to be all like that. Well, a good booze should be smooth as basis. Otherwise, just drink ethanol, or mixed it up.

      • "with ice to allow the complex flavours to come out" doesn't really make sense to me.

The more you chill the beverage the less flavours emerge.

Have you experienced more flavours with ice than without?

Agree. This is really good. One for the sweet tooth's of the whisky world. Winey/Porty lingering finish.

      $65 is a bargain.

Much better than the Two Fold.

    • One of the best I have tried. If my tummy didn't object so much I would jump on this deal. :)

I read cask wine and I thought goon. Goon whiskey could be a thing.

  • Incredibly interesting taste profile. I'd say it's inoffensive to non whisky drinkers. Raised my eyebrows when I tasted this.

  • And it's all sold!

    • thanks for the head up, updated

  • Even Amazon has it for $69.75 & free delivery for non prime members….

But no reviews in Amazon very tempted to buy but not sure about the taste!!!!

Looks like you missed out. This is an excellent whiskey, even more so at this price. The nova is aged in red wine barrels and you can really taste the tannins IMO. So if you like whiskey and red wine, you'll like this one. If you hate red wine, maybe give it a pass. For the record I do not enjoy wine, but love this whiskey. It is my go to cheaper whiskey.

      • Ok thanks for that advise, i do like my wine but not a great whiskey person.

Will keep an eye next time and will try it ta!

  • Literally just bought a bottle from Dan's site, so definitely not sold out.

  • Just bought last 3 bottles from Amazon. Love this drop.

  • oos on amazon too

  • Looks good to me; I bought a couple of these bottles and saw the two-fold on special too

  • Was a DM's member special for $85 a couple of weeks ago so good price now.

  • Nice find op.

Anyone know how this compares with the Talisker port ruighie?

  • seems sold out again on ebay link

  • It’s available on Dan’s website, just did C&C purchase.

  • Looks like it's gone back up to $95 on Dan's website, google ad still shows $65 though when you follow the link goes up to $95

  • Tasty stuff! Thanks OP

  • Did anyone else receive the wrong bottle from DM (ebay).
    I got solera instead

    • Wow really… That's a bit of a win

      • It is. $130rrp. not to say it's worth that but still decent.
I wanna see if I can get another free bottle shipped. Totally doubt it lol

        Did you buy the bottle?

        • I didn't as I have a nova already… But I wish I had ordered so I could get a Solera by mistake!

Keen to know what the solera is like when you crack it open!

Call Dan's after you open it. You'll probably be given a refund.

  • Has anyone that ordered from Amazon received notification that theirs has shipped yet?
