TV Similar to X9500g I Had to Leave behind Due to Move for Work (< $1800)

Hi guys,

Had to move to Sydney for work.
Couldn't take 65inch 9500g 4K backlit android TV that was just over 1 year old. I don't think 65inch works for current place, and would need to go down to 55inch, but want the same specs as the beast I had to leave behind.
I have looked around, and there's no stock of the 55 inch 9500g anywhere. Don't want to (read: can't) spend $2500 on the newer Sony 9500h.
Looked at the Samsung Q80, noticed it is not android TV, and our previous Samsung had issues (would randomly turn on and off) whereas none of Sony TVs had any issues.
Have seen plenty of others at JB, but the majority are edge-lit. Also cannot afford OLED with my budget (sub $1800).

Not someone who will stick with just the brand due to name, so happy to consider others like Hisense, TCL etc… The salesman kept insisting that other than the samsung q80, the others are all sub-par.
My thinking is to get something decent that I can use for a long time, enjoy watching 4K movies. Don't want to spend $700-1400 on something where the picture quality will bug me and want me to spend more money down the line to replace - don't need a TV for another room…

Happy to clarify anything if unclear.

Thank you for your help.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who contributed. Quite the day today! A wonder through eBay presented a factory refurbished 9500g at $1550 that sold in the time I took to think about whether I'd gamble on a factory refurb; then out of the blue a new 9500g popped up out of nowhere. Took the plunge before that one went as it was really what I had set my mind on. Thanks again all

Not a lot of deals at the moment. I'd be inclined to go for the 55" Hisense Q8 at that price point. Can easily pick up for under $1,500 at The Good Guys or JB HiFi with some haggling and discount gift cards (or is currently $1,458 at The Good Guys Commercial if you have access).

    • Hi. I did note that TV in store.
I've seen it cheaper on OzBargain earlier this year, so decided to cool off and do some more research.
      Thank you for the suggestion.

You’re kind of stuck aren’t you? At that price point you will not get a comparable tv. Are you sure you cant fit that 65” where you’re going? If you refuse the Samsung range then your only option right now as I see it is the 55” Sony X8000H - though its not in the same class as the 9500G. We might see the 9000H soon, but I reckon that might be a bit over your budget and still not as good as your 9500G.

    • Yes. I think so too.
The x8000H is not in the same class, you are right. Unclear about the 9000H. Saw that this model has a component that isn't in any of their other TVs. All things considered, don't know how the unit is (need to see reviews) and have no idea about price point.

Might just have to wait and see.

Look on ebay for a second hand OLED. I picked up a 55" LG for $600 a few months ago.

Also consider using an external TV box, I use a Vodafone TV box personally, but there's lots of good options.
Gets you Android TV and you don't have to replace the whole screen if something goes wrong with the box

Buying a second hand OLED is a terrible idea unless its near new

      • Because of burn in? That's fairly obvious on inspection. There's also plenty of software tricks that are done on a modern TV to minimise it.

        • The software tricks are primarily to stop image retention, not burn in. Unfortunately OLED has a limited lifespan and if you look at the tests done by Rtings, 100k hours quoted by LG is not true at all.

    • You're going to have to replace your whole screen at some point in the near future anyway. OLEDs have a finite lifespan.

      • 100k hours is what LG quotes as a lifespan for a modern OLED panel.

Everything has a finite lifespan. Rtings suggest it isn't a huge problem on realistic content

        • Yeah, but you bought yours second hand. It's probably done 99,500hrs already

    • Good get if it's in mint condition, or close to.
As mentioned in other comments, purchasing second hand has its own pro's and con's.
The gamble, especially if purchasing sight-unseen, is that there's a major issue with the unit. Hell, even a minor issue if persistent can be quite bothersome!

I have the Q70 Samsung. The random power on and off was solved in a firmware update (for me). I use the TV as a monitor 100% of the time, and never use any of the TV software. I think its a beautiful panel, and worth the money for what I am using it for. One of the best things about it is the TV powers on and off in less than 5 seconds, which is what I dont think you get with the TCL. You'd have to try that out instore.

If i were you I'd just settle for a cheaper TV as your chance of going through the same thing of moving for work again is probably pretty high in the next 12 months.

"The random power on and off was solved"
I had a Samsung 3D TV that never had this resolved. Read it was a known issue originating from a component on the board; software wouldn't fix.

I thought the Q80 would be similar to the 9500g.

I hear you with the possibility of moving again - damn economy, specific industry, and COVID! I'll either be paying to move everything (removalist) or stay where I am and change jobs in current location.

      Thanks for the comment

I read plenty about those previous issues too, and there seems to be a lottery on samsung TVs with this problem. The advertising that got pushed to the TV menu is also a massive turn off. A lot of people use pihole to block it, i just never look at the menu.

        Good luck buddy

I have this one from EKO, for the price it is an amazing TV, high def streaming is great on Kayo and the other apps that I use that provide it

    • Thanks for the reply.
Although not the same specification as the Sony 9500g, I'm trying to keep an open mind and will look at all suggestions made.

Didn't look too hard at your previous tv specs but would this be any good ?

    • Thanks for the reply.
I saw this one. Good price for entry 4K TV for sure. Even considered the ALDI "Bauhn" 4K TV.
These are not the same specification as the Sony 9500g.
But, as mentioned above, I'm trying to keep an open mind and will look at all suggestions made.
