  • Has anyone got one of these that can testify to it driving well? I know it has three motors and a control hub but I just see about $0.27 a piece and think ouch.

Define "driving well", because virtually no Lego RC sets do (aside from the really old Lego RC race buggies like this, this or this). Any sub-$50 RC toy car from BigW or Target will perform exponentially better than any RC set Lego has put out in the last decade. All of the Technic RC sets are universally a lot slower than you'd expect and can barely make it over a thick towel or heavy pile carpet without getting stuck.

The X-Treme Off-Roader is still dog slow but the Smart Hub and new Powered Up motors are a slight improvement over the old Power Functions motors in terms of speed and maximum torque, though I really dislike controlling Lego vehicles with the Technic Control+ app as opposed to the older IR remotes; the touch controls are lot less precise compared to the older physical joysticks, the vehicle is a lot harder to steer and takes a while to sync over BT.

This review shows the maximum climbing angle is still pretty dismal and the turning circle is still way too wide.

There's some simple modifications you can make that'll improve its ability to handle steeper inclines but nothing can be done to make it faster.

The best feature of the X-Treme Off-Roader is the planetary drive and independent front and rear suspension which hasn't been featured in a Technic set in a very long time and gives this set a lot more realistic movement, especially when traversing gradients and obstacles as well as better durability in surviving bumps/falls.
