Why is the iPhone 4S more expensive on ebay?

I know the phone has just been released and no one is going to be selling it less than the apple store right now but howcome this seller for example has the 4s 16gb for $1099 when it is $799 from the apple store?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/APPLE-iPHONE-4S-BLACK-WHITE-16GB-…

They seem to have sold 13 of the 64gb which is also $300 more than the apple store price.

because some people on ebay are incredibly stupid, and that applies as sellers and buyers

      That! Seriously THAT!
I've seen items that is marked 40% above the RRP and still sell well sigh

People associate e-bay with a bargain, kind of like COTD and assume they are getting something cheap without checking.

      Lazy ;)

You can sell whatever JUNK in ebay..

  • you should see the ebay prices for tim tams and vegemite o.O

  • and also scams

    as in

Buyer buys phone and then receives it HOWEVER files a dispute for non-arrival

Maybe because there was a shortage (At least in Vic on Friday - Apple stores sold out). And it hasn't been released to other countries in the world yet, so people who don't have one and can't access one anytime soon are willing to pay more than RRP for it. Supply and demand.

yeah and aus was the first country to get it (time difference)

Of course, the seller lists this as being available for os shipment, and the Oz phones are unlocked. And the phone is not available in many other countries at this time.

The seller is providing a service for those who want to take advantage of it.

        • hong kong grey market for iphone is large and china
hong kong aint getting it until dec they say (prolly due to the fact that they sell phones outright usually)

I actually know people (in Australia) selling unlocked iPhone 4S back to China with a premium, as it wasn't available there yet. A lot of people there earning incredibly low wages making our widgets, but at the same time there are also a lot of people there with money to burn…

    • well store's like "SugarFix" markcup american/british candy and softdrinks by up to 500%, why can't aussies do it?

    • at least none have been bought so far

C'est la vie. You can never tell human beings' mind…

Try check whether those sellers are posting to worldwide, if they are then that explains it as iPhone 4s is not yet available to all countries. Apple fans in these countries are definitely willing to pay more than Apple's price as long as they can get it asap and thus owning a "rare" iPhone in their countries.

Conclusion: not all sellers/buyers on eBay are stupid ;)

But most of them are. And mostly and often, the buyers.

I find this happens a lot just after a new product is released. They usually don't get significantly cheaper on ebay until the product has been released for a while and used versions pop up, putting more pressure on discount sellers.
