AirAsia Refund or Credit

Hi,

I have flights to and from KL booked in August. AirAsia has cancelled these flights and wants to give me a 720 day credit. This isn't much use to me as I don't normally fly with them and I don't know when I might be travelling again so I want a refund.

Has anyone managed to get a refund? Would Citi bank find in my favour if I did a charge back?

Thank you

  • when did you book the flight ?

    • February, it didn't look like covid would be an issue at the time.

      • You could try, however even if approved your looking at minimum of a few months if not more. All airlines are delaying refunds to preserve what little cash they have left.

  • I got the credit which now lasts 2 years. Airlines have no money so will drag out any refund request. Worth a try though - if they refuse you will get credit regardless

Airlines are allowed to issue a travel voucher instead of a refund (I don't make the rules, don't blame me).

Some are refunding if pushed, but being Airasia is a budget airline, you'll have little hope of that! Take the credit voucher.

But if you want, sure try a credit card chargeback.

  • I had a flight booked to KL in June with airasia too - argued I should get a refund since they were cancelling. not me. Apparently if it's a government enforced order to cancel the flight, the airline only needs to offer a credit. So yeah. got 2 years to use the credit, though the likelihood of me utlising that credit is slim :(

  • I have the same issue on a cancelled flight to Lombok.
Its not a lot of money so, while I'd rather have the cash, its not the end of the world.
Here's hoping that we can use it within the two years!

  • you have to push the real hard. it will take 4 months to get refund. i am still waiting.
credit is not much use as no flights for few months now and dont know when it will resume.
    good luck

  • I had my flight in July cancelled by Airasia too. Applied for a refund ended up in a bottomless hole with an auto generated standard reply. The email support was not helpful as they considered it was a non-active activity and therefore no human interaction support will be given. Telephone calls to the KL ticketing office was cut off after exactly 5 minutes holding, even though I was told I was the next in line with 30 seconds a number of times. They generated a case in my cases with status closed with no further explanation. My Bankwest credit card did not want to entertain chargeback with airline refund. Not knowing what to do further, I requested a credit account. Surprisingly, it was approved within 2 days after being told it would take 10 business days to process. It is plain fact Airasia did not want to refund and will drag on as long as they can, keeping you in the dark. Congratulation to those who are successful in getting their cash back. You are the extreme few luck ones.

  • I booked a flight with AirAsia in November from Brisbane to Bangkok they cancelled it in March because I no longer fly out of Brisbane and said I can transfer the flight to Coolangatta so I asked for a refund and I've been waiting 4 months they said it would be credited to my card I used

  • Looks like AirAsia is restructuring / in receivership. Possibly all flight credit is gone.

    • AirAsia X, there is many diffrent companies.

      • AirAsia X is the long-haul subsidiary of the main AirAsia Berhad, which flew to Australia. My booking was with them.

I got a charge back through citi bank.
My flights were supposed to be end of Jan 21. I was advised though in July 2020 flight cancelled. I did not take credit offer and kept asking for refund. Finally got case for refund after 3 months and no refund as told put in a case for charge back.
Originally refund was only for Aus to KL they wouldn't refund internal flights even though we couldn't get there.
With charge back we got it all refunded.
    You can at least try.

I ended up doing a charge back with citi as well. AirAsia tried to fight it and sent me a print out of the T&C's but I persisted and got it in the end.
