Buying an iPad off Gumtree/Marketplace - What to Check

HI All
Im looking at getting an ipad from someone off gumtree and was just wondering what to check/look for for before i hand over the cash. If its shrink wrapped, i guess i might need to open it up/check the model? anything else beyond turning it on?
Thanks

  • Make sure the iCloud account is definitely logged out. Read this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351

Also - make sure you meet in a public place.

    • how public are we talking….? i thought meeting them somewhere like their place/work was smart since i can go back to my car, check some stuff, and go back to them if needed…

      • Somewhere with witnesses to deter any dodgy behaviour

      • I buy and sell heaps of iphones/ipads off gumtree, mostly go to peoples place or they come to me never had a problem, people that want to meet in car parks i am weary. Last purchase few weeks ago which i am using was a brand new iPad Air 64Gb 4g for $500, retail $999 from Apple. Actually met in the local mall near ATM.
Just check the serial no, you can set it up there only takes a few minutes and check, use hotspot on your phone if its a wifi only.

        • Wow, what a deal! Do you find FB or gumtree better? Any other tips to get a great deal?

          • @JuryWheel: I'm not on facebook so don't know. Aim low if people need the cash they will sell, it's harder to get a bargain if you need the device ASAP though, depends where you live too and the amount of listings.
I use a few gumtree accounts so can burn people on one if they are a PITA.

I'd recommend the opposite, at least if you meet up at their house you know where they live if they do the dodgy. If you're in public you have no recourse.

      • So stroll into a house with unknown amount of occupants with lots of cash to meet a person you haven't met before. WCGW?

          1. You have their address and you would of known who's robbed you. You don't have to stroll into the house - unless you really want to.
          2. I've done this plenty of times with $1000+ bikes etc. never had an issue, red flags go up when they want to meet in public. Thats when it's likely stolen.
        • Just meet outside their house FFS

If you're asking these questions then just don't do it. It's not worth the tears.

  • Make sure the capacity listed on the ad matches the box and the device.
If it's a sim model make sure the imei matches the box and run a check to make sure it hasn't been blocked.

Best do it at a police station, surrounded by armed guards, with a gunship circling over head, just incase

  • If it's shrink wrapped let the buyer know that you will be buying for sure as long as it's legit.Otherwise, you basically just turned a brand new item into a used item.

If it's a cellular model be sure to check the IMEI number to confirm it isn't blocked for use.

    Make sure it's iCloud unlocked.

  • Definitely ask for proof of purchase and verify the serial number on the Apple website.
