Belong Data how up to date is data usage?

Hey friends,
My main mobile provider is catch (optus). As I was heading into the Bush here in WA, I bought a belong sim and then bought 100gb of data here on ozbargain.
I was gone for three weeks. I used catch a bit, but mostly left my sim selection on belong. I also travelled with someone 10 days and hit spotted them constantly.

I've been back a few days and have checked my data balance and I've used less than 15gb.

I watch/listen to 6 to 10 hours of YouTube content per day. So even though I mostly listened while drove or while I surfed the Internet, it would have been video content. I also downloaded a few audible books.

Does it sound right that I would have only used 15gb? Does belong have a significant delay in allocating usage? I'm genuinely puzzled.

Additionally, I might as well consider keeping the account open for awhile as I'm likely to travel remotely around WA for the next year, seeing as how we can not leave WA. What's the most cost effective way to keep the account open? I've changed it to the 1gb plan so I guess it's only 10 or 15 per month.

Thanks 💐

Almost real time in my experience

    • OK thanks. It hasn't budged for the last couple of days. I'm shocked at how little I used.

  • Very close to real time. Don't worry about running out as you just get slowed down, no extra charges unless you want to top up.

For cheap top ups (cheaper than the $10/2GB you can do through the app or site) look out for discounted starter packs. Register them using PayPal for the payment method and use your own referral code. Gift the data to yourself then cancel the PayPal authorisation. Change the amount per month of the new one to equal or less than what you got for using the referral code. Check back next month and see if you got a free recharge and gift that data to yourself as well. Then cancel it through the website or app.

    • OK thanks. I appreciate your help.

Do be careful with this method. Theres been stories on Ozbargain with people who've had their accounts blocked due to self referring.

  • I'm going to stop monitoring this post. I'm going to put another one up shortly, asking advice on the feasibility of giving up my nbn. And just having a dedicated phone at the house to hit spot to. I think I could save hundreds a year. I'll post that later tonight or tomorrow. Thanks.

Depends on your usage, latency requirements, and amount of people in your household.
You won't be able to game on hotspot permanently, streaming is fine.

      My ADSL2+ dropped to 4Mbps/1Mbps Down/Up speed.
      It was unusable.

The alternate internet source was $5 kogan sim card starter packs in an older android flagship phone, hooked up to a Xiaomi Pro Wifi Repeater.

I did that for 18 months, around 2-3 sim cards per month.
Only annoying thing was to keep registering and switching to new sim cards every time.

So $15-20/month but inconvenient, not able to game, and limited data.
Definitely recommend if you're on a budget and renting

      • All I do is shop, watch YouTube, Netflix and prime.. I don't game. I think I might give it a go. If its too annoying, it will at least prompt me to get cheaper nbn. I'm paying 89 a month.

        Thanks for the advice. 💐
