Transferring My Mobile Number from A Telstra Business Account to Prepaid

Hi guys, my mobile number got swapped to my boss' Telstra business plan a couple of years ago and I'll soon be leaving the business. Is it possible (and easy) to:
- 1. change the ownership of the number back to me?; and
- 2. put that number on a Telstra Prepaid plan?

The website gives me pretty loose info on this and calling the hotline doesn't help as it just diverts me to the online chat portal..

Any advice/experience will be much appreciated!

    1) Boss has to sign a form and submit it to Telstra to move it to your name (on a plan)
    2) Once its on a plan you can ask them to make it Prepaid

That is the form for you boss to fill out

The process you're after is the "CHOWN' (change owner) process. You can find the form (which contains the info required) in the below link. CHOWN is normally done to a pre-paid account, but you can verify with them when you submit the paperwork. Your existing business will need to sign it as well. From experience (through Optus) they usually send a SIM out first (or you can pick one up from a local Optus store) then confirm you have it with the number, then transfer. Whole process is usually within 2-5 business days, keep the new SIM on you.

Down to the same link ^^

  • These sites should help. Your boss might need to sign some of the paperwork so I’d get on that ASAP.

From the second link you can’t do business plan >> prepaid.

    So
    1. Change to the cheapest post paid plan possible in your name

    1. Go to a Telstra store and change it to prepaid.
  • Thanks guys, much appreciated!

    • It will go to a $50 casual plan once in your name then you take it to wherever you want. If you're quick (like as soon as the new SIM with your number on it gets activated) and port it to another provider like Aldi (buy a SIM in advance) you shouldn't get any bill or charges from Telstra.

I went through this a few months ago and the Aldi port went through in less than an hour and I did it less than 30 minutes after the SIM in my name went live.

This is bad advise. You could end up loosing your number. Most porting requests are done manually and from what I’ve heard from mates in the telco sector there are delays due to overseas teams normally doing this work.

        • What are you talking about?

        • Its actually very easy to do in store as long as the paperwork is filled out. There is a possibility that you will not have an active service for up to 24 hours but is very rare that this happens.

      • I don't mind if it goes on the telstra 'S' plan for a month - yes its a rip off compared to every other plan out there, but if it means keeping the number then so be it.. I'll port away by the end of the first month though.

You really don't need to wait. Once it's activated on your new sim there's no chance of losing it. Save yourself the money. It's what we're here for right?

  • You can also just pick up a $2 Vodafone or Optus sim and port your number out. All you need to do is get the account number from your company and port with voda or optus and don't mention anything about it being a business account just provide that its postpaid and the account number.

Wait 5-10 mins and it should be ported.

Note your company will be hit with an $8 port away fee vs doing the CHOWN process which saves them the $8 fee.

    • Good to know - this will be my plan-B if they're a bit slow..

    • Just a question on this method - is it best to just go into a optus/voda store to do this? Or if I pick up a sim it'll happen online?

Sorry if this is a noob-ish question, I've not done this in years..

      • Pick up a sim from Coles or Woolworths and do it online… No need for a store. Porting teams are open. Just don't use Telstra or a Telstra reseller like Aldi or Woolworths.

You could also use Amaysim if you want to stick $10 on it for a months usage until you figure out where you want to go long term.

        • Should note most will require you to respond to a txt message or similar secondary verification so make sure you have access to a phone with your current SIM/number.

          • @i37: Thanks i37 - I tried it with voda last night night but it didn't work, said to call 1555… That may have been because it was about 9pm.. I'll try again this morning.

edit - still the same error.. But thankfully the optus sim I got seems to be working! Has gone through online, now the waiting game for the port to happen.. zzzzz

edit 2 - Optus worked - winning! Thanks again for your help!

            • @axloz: @axloz that's great news! Glad I could help.
