Xiamoi Yeelight Won't Work on 5GHz - Suggestions?

Hi all,

I have recently moved to a new mine site and like to use my yeelight to wake me up. Unfortunately, the wifi at the site is on a 5ghz frequency that the bulb can't connect to. I don't have access to the router or anything.

Is anyone aware of any workarounds (I guess worst case would buy a long term, low data sim and hotspot out of an old phone) that might let me set up my light?

Thanks

    Yeelight's only have 2.4Ghz support
Are you sure the wifi at site doesn't have 2.4Ghz ability, usually this provides better range then 5Ghz.
Find out who has access to the router to get them to enable 2.4Ghz and you should be good.

    • Thanks, I spoke to the IT bloke and he said 5g is faster, and that was why the village was on it. Don't think he is willing to make any changes for someone so easily replacable!

  • looking at the spec sheet, shows 2.4ghz so will not work on 5ghz networks.

    It's Xiaomi

Sure, you get a Wi-Fi bridge device to recieve the 5Ghz signal, then output it to an ethernet cable to another WiFi router that can operate on the 2.4Ghz signal.

    • Thanks, I think I have an old WiFi extender kicking around at home I might try out first. If that doesn't work I'll look into a bridge adapter!

    Use 2.4Ghz instead

Buy another wireless access point (extender) that supports 2.4Ghz.

    • Thanks, I think I have an old one kicking around home from 5 years ago, I'll bring that up next time and see how she goes!

Many IOT devices will not do 2.4ghz. It adds a lot of extra cost and complexity to the product.

    you could…

    Buy a 2.4ghz router that supports 4G
Insert in a Cellular dongle or sim card
    use LTE connection

or ask your network admin for SSID of a 2.4ghz wireless connection. a 5ghz network is usually accompanied by a 2.4ghz one.

    • Not just many but the majority of them, only those in the higher end segment does, like those google home, alexa. Almost all of the chinese and cheap brand won't do 5ghz

    • Thanks, I'll see if i can use an extender to reach it. If not, I'll just get a mobile dongle.

Only just realised that the yeelights need a password, which the village wifi doesn't have either.

      • yeah, you better get the light on its own router or some sort, those wifi use different type of authentication will not work with most smart devices

        • When you say it's own router, will a dongle / mobile hotspot work?

@wittyusername: Yes it should but the range can be limited, also check out for battery performance because your light might need a tap every time the router is off
