Skip UberEATS, Get 20% off?

Ordered some takeaway from a nearby Indian restaurant the other day for pickup and when I got there they took 20% off the bill because I picked up myself.

Pick up saves them the horrendous 35% ubereats tax, plus of course it saves them the cost of looking after sit-down patrons or organising their own delivery. With this in mind I think a 20% discount for pickup actually sounds pretty fair and reasonable.

I will be recommending this to places I order from in the future. Seems like a win-win.

Would you do the same? Do you see any reason why this is unfair or otherwise unwarranted?

(I understand the current corona situation might make you want to honour the full price to help out - you can still do that as a tip.)

I would do that. But none of the restaurants in my area is offering that. That's why I prefer ordering via UE.

    • Ask them. They will still be 15% ahead.

      • Phone them before ordering via UE?

        • Just order over the phone for pickup. Use ubereats as a menu if you want.

Same shit as hotels. Book on Expedia it cost them like 20% . But if you try booking through them they charge you even more. So f them. Just make them pay max commission if they don’t give you any discount going through them.

Uber May have some bs gag clause that they can’t use Uber if they offer cheaper pick up than Uber’s app. Anyone know if that’s the case?

      • Yea, it’s ridiculous. Reminds me of some Cathay Pacific flights being $1 000 cheaper on Skyscanner - ‘trip.com’. I tried my hardest to book with Cathay direct but they wouldn’t discount even a little. Had to risk it with a bit of a dodgy company but saved a grand.

Would hate for them to ultimately price up 20% for their menu or overall from UE

I noticed that there is a price increase in restaurant offerings and even smaller portions.

    • Who's to say they haven't already increased prices to cover the ubereats tax?

If they up their prices enough the "free" market should regulate them commensurately.

In any event, a true user-pays system would surely have a better price for pickup than eat-in or delivery. We accept this for Domino's (who's delivery costs must be next to relatively nothing with their pedal powered juniors) - IMO this should be acceptable more generally.

Next to nothing? How many deliveries you think the drivers make an hour? Maybe 6 or 7? Minimum wage is a shade under $20 an hour + super + expenses for the scooters they drive. So maybe that is $4-$5 a delivery minimum? Hardly nothing.

        • I said "relatively." Relative to ~$5 plus 35%.

  • There are a few places in Melbourne that offer discounts for pick up. Only 10% usually. But the price of the food through the phone order is also a little bit cheaper than uber eats so it works out even a little more than that. Still I'd rather just pay the tax at the moment and have no human interaction.

  • Loads of restaurants offer 10-20% off for takeaway, that's nothing new. Uber Eats is a service. I don't believe there is any unfairness in UE taking a cut (although if it really is 35% that seems a bit extreme), the cost of takeaway food in this country is high. Uber Eats fees may eat into the restaurant owners profit somewhat, but they are gaining access to more customers. So no I do not think it is unfair, and nor should the prices be any higher for the customers. I have to pay fees as part of my work too, anything from 5-20%. It is what it is.

  • That 35% the restaurant pays is so Interests can get Kim Kardashian and others to advertise them. I always phone and pick up my orders as I'd prefer the money in the pocket of the small business.

I've noticed many places offer deals for either direct purchase. I'd he happy with an extra naan.
