Best Phone I Can Get on a 12 Month Plan?

Hi Guys

What's the best phone I can get on a 12 month plan? I currently use up about half of my current $29 cap $180 calls, but i'm happy to go higher if i can get a decent phone. I'm hoping to find a plan where the market price for phone is greater than or equal to the monthly plan. I need to keep one phone on telstra 2g- so i kind of have to double up on expenses - i'd lofe the s2, but i haven't really been able to find an overly attractive deal.

Thanks in advance.

Best i've been able to find is:
Milestone 2 - $29/m over 12 mths
Omnia 7 - $29/m over 12 mths
Glaxy s2 - $59 a month

  • Who has the S2 for $59 a month?

Vodafone on the $29 cap with $30 handset fee?

    • Yep, the $29 with 30 handset.

    • LOL - didn't you realise that $30 handset cost on a $29 plan is… ummm… $59?

      • …Really? Didn't you realise that Isp was confirming that AG_ACT was looking at Vodafone and not another company?! lol

    • [oops - double post due to an accidental clicking spasm]

  • I need to keep one phone on telstra 2g-

Is this one one contract, and do you use it to make many calls? If not, a prepaid long-life plan might be a cheaper way to keep it. A $40 top up will buy 6 months, while a $60 one will extend it out to 12 months.

We took out two two-year post paid contracts at Telstra store (have to have Telstra for coverage) and were not offered a choice on contract length. I only discovered online a couple of weeks later that the same phone was available for the same price on just a twelve month contract.

    • Precisely what I am doing, but I need data, so I have gone for simplicity, so i can keep data without buying a browse pack. I don't really have any issues with the telstra side. I just want a new handset + a few calls (a $19 cap would actually suit me - but i want a decent handset)

  • sorry, wrong posting

Is it urgent? Are you able to wait till November? The price each month for the GS2 on the 12mth contract most probably will drop. I remember seeing $25/mth for the phone near the end of September I think, but unfortunately it most likely was just an offer since it has now gone back up..

    • Nah, not urgent. Happy to wait, but i figured if i start looking now, I might find a decent deal by November/December.

I thought I saw the S2 for $25 p/m over 24 mths on on voda $29… but i could be wrong.

What do you think of the Galaxy or ARC for $609 21 months on Virgin - i don't really want to go this route, 24 months is a really really long time to hang onto a phone lol

      • Yeah 2 years is too long. I almost got into a contract with Virgin just before I found out about their network congestion issue which apparently is still going on here in Melbourne. I was using their prepaid so it was easy to switch but not so for my girlfriend who was 6 months into their 2 yrs contract.

Anyways, yeah it's not worth getting tied down for 2 years just in case the network provider experience issues that will take them longer time than your contract to fix.

While about the phones, Arc has no front facing camera so not really future proof. And if I didn't remember wrongly I think its internal memory is the same as Play's at 300+ mb which is too little. While the original Galaxy S has the lagging issues due to the wrong file format used by Samsung for the RAM which is very very messy to fix. I've tried it before but couldn't and ended up switching to Incredible S.

  • Anyone know how much for the Galaxy S2 for an existing customer upgrading for 12 months? Cheers!

    • I dunno.. I suppose it's better if you just call them and ask. I think it might be cheaper doing it over the phone rather than asking in-store.

  • Best phone I reckon is the Samsung Omnia 7 for free on a 12 month $29 plan…

Similar specs as a Galaxy but running Windows rather than Android.

Only probl;em is the small data allowance. You'd need an extra data pack.

    • Data allowance is fine. As good things as I've heard about mango, I'm still kinda reluctant to shift away from android though..

But thanks for your help. It was definately the direction I was heading in.

  • I got the S2 for 12 months on the $65 infinite, no handset fee and the last couple of months of my current contract waived…

How do u get it. Its pretty good. I think, it has $25 mobile fee per month otherwise.

      • Was just upgrading after receiving a few texts inviting me to, I called 1555 for customer service and was told I would need to pay an early termination fee to upgrade now! He also started reading the plans pretty much as they were listed on the website ie $25 extra handset fee, I told him what he was telling me was contradictory to the implication of being sent an invitation to upgrade and that if they're only going to offer what's available to the public I may as well leave Vodafone, he then asked me if I'd like to speak with the "special upgrades team" who I was able to negotiate a new deal with, my sister got the $45 infinite with $10 handset payments and I heard someone else got $45 without handset payments…who knows?

The only difference between plans is data, my sister would be 500mb better off after buying a $10pm 2gb data plan, she doesn't need it so she did really well, notably I was a current Vodafone customer and she was Three.

  • I just left Three after trying really hard to negogiate a decent deal to no avail .Ended up buying the Acer Liquid Metal from JBHifi and going on the $15/month TPG bundled deal . $550 worth of calls to anyone , free TPG to TPG and 1.5GB data is a hard to beat deal especially after looking at the total cost over 12 months with the added bonus of no contract . TPG uses the Optus network and is at least where we live a lot better than the crappy Three network .
    Total cost over 12 months = $128 (handset) + 12x$15 + $20 (sim) = $328
If your not already with TPG I think the unbundled monthly cost is $17/month

    • Yeah my sister had to call a few times, getting the last couple of months of my current contract cancelled ($60) less the last couple ($130) is only around $600, maybe a few hundred back selling it in 10 months is only $300 to use the galaxy s2 with 2gb data on the infinite plan, im ok w/this.
