Can I Plex on this D-Link Router?

I dont know much about using plex accept I need a computer or NAS to run as a plex server in order for my non-pro Nvidia shield act as client

However I have the below dlink router still sealed in a box collecting dust, can I use it as a dedicated plex server?

I think I can use it as a general server as it has a usb connection on back. But for plex, I would need to be able to run the plex app on it which I dont think it supports?

Is there any use of this device for using plex if I dont want use my current laptop as a server.

  • Short answer: no.

Long answer: something like a pi or Synology would suffice.

    • Longer answer: a cheap nas (even synology or qnap) won't do because its cpu will be too weak, plex even refuses to run on them outright, if you're looking at streaming 4k smoothly on a plex run on nas expect to spend over $1000 easily.

  • You can start a Plex server with nothing more than a spare computer and a hdd, you just need to install and run the server software.

The next step up would be a medium to high end 4 to 8 bay NAS which would include a CPU powerful enough to transcode, note you will probably need the paid Plex pass for this.

The ultimate setup is a NAS + NUC or similar low power high performance computer.

The decision really depends on your budget and what/how much content you have.

  • From memory there's info on the Plex site relevant to your question, but as has already been said 'no' a router cannot run Plex server software.
