Synology 5-Bay DS1019+ $1,017 Shipped @ Computer Alliance eBay

130
HAPPY3

Certainly not the cheapest the Synology DS1019+ has been - $891.65 in November 2019 and this is only a 3% eBay coupon so depending on your need you could wait for a better coupon or pull the trigger now.

I've been tossing up between the DS1019+ and DS918+. Leaning towards the 5 bay option, was hoping for another sub $1000 deal but I'm not sure if we're going to see that anytime soon…

UPDATE: I didn't realise this coupon is targeted, some may not have it.

    Price in title bro

  • Only 9 available

    • I believe that means it doesn’t qualify as a deal…

Happy for you guys to report it if this isn't worthwhile to you. These are $1000 NAS boxes, safe to say they aren't going out of stock quickly

Same price as UMart for $1019 without a coupon if you prefer shopping there - https://www.umart.com.au/Synology-DiskStation-DS1019+-5-Bay-… (but note that I am a huge fan of Computer Alliance on eBay who have been great to deal with when something I received was faulty)

Pity because just a few weeks ago it was $999 at UMart, and potentially slightly cheaper with Shopback/Cashrewards and discounted egift cards from Amazon… if only I had bought the November deal back when I shared it rather than waiting until July 2020.

I feel your pain man. Back in November I wanted a DS1618+ and it's only recently I realised with larger capacity drives now available I don't need the 6 bays. With 4 bays I can run RAID5 but with 5 bays I can run my preferred RAID6 (SHR/2) so 5 bays is the sweet spot. Pity I didn't realise this last November :)

How is your DS1019+ going? You've been buying the 12TB drives like me if I recall reading your posts on those HDD deals correctly :)

      • Indeed. I've got 2 shucked ones, and 1 more en route. I also stupidly bought the Seagate 10TB drive without realising that you can't add a smaller drive to an SHR (only larger drives) but that's ok, I decided I'll just shuck it for my desktop and take my existing WD 8TB drive out and use that as a separate volume without RAID for unimportant things and a mirror of my parents' NAS.

I'm pretty happy with the DS1019+. Watched a review comparing it with the 920+ and whilst the 920+ has the newer CPU, I think the extra bay inside the unit is worth more to me just from a sheer volume perspective.

I probably saw the same review (NASCompares right? - that guy is awesome), yeah it all comes down to that 5th bay, so I'm with you on that.

Don't worry, having a spare 10TB drive is a good problem to have at the end of the day :)

Funny about the 12TB drives. My 2nd order arrived really fast, my 1st order (all made on the same night) hasn't even shipped yet. But I don't have the new NAS yet so no biggie. I'm going to set up my 4 drives in SHR2 right away, I know that sounds stupid but that 24TB will still hold everything I'm transferring across, so having 36TB would provide no benefit. And I can add the 5th 12TB drive later as it's needed.

@Click_It: Just make sure you set up SHR properly. I realised I set up the DS215j for my parents but somehow must've set it to RAID 1 rather than SHR and that means in the future I can't upgrade the drives to a larger model :( (without starting over)

            • @jace88: Ah yes will do, from memory that's an easy mistake to make. You can actually start with SHR1 and migrate to SHR2 (i've done that twice in the past) but I'm happy to launch right in with SHR2 this time. Another thing to keep in mind, you can't go SHR2 > SHR1 either.

I'm not pulling the trigger on this price, I figure I can afford to wait another 4-6 weeks so I'm hedging my bets on a better deal coming. EBay has been very disappointing lately so we're well overdue for a decent coupon.

Only 3 I am not happy.

    • Tell me about it. Hopefully there is a bigger code coming soon. I might not have time to wait unfortunately.

  • +1

I think you should wait. Computer alliance is always part of some ebay sales.

  • I've been tossing up between the DS1019+ and DS918+.

Why not the new DS920+ that's on my shopping list?

    • +2

I don't think the faster CPU warrants the price hike.

That said, DS918+ is no longer being supplied to vendors so we're unlikely to see prices fall much below $700 anymore bringing them a little closer.

But at the end of the day the 5 bay lets me run RAID6 (SHR/2) which would be pointless in the 4 bay. I just like the extra redundancy during a rebuild scenario.

  • you think they are worth double these units?

not that im in the market but seems overly expensive. (paying for the brand?)

i guess it comes down to what your going to use it for.

I see where you are coming from. I've found Synology extremely reliable over the years with 2 older NAS's (DS1511+, DS1813+) but something nobody talks about is resale value. I'm actually able to sell my DS1511+ for more than I paid for it back in 2014! (2nd hand then) And the DS1813+ has held almost 70% of the price tag. People don't seem to understand how old some of these units are and snap them up for a premium.

So those 2 reasons keeps me loyal to the brand. I also like Synology's hybrid RAID options, athough I don't tend to really utilize them to their best use (allows different sized drives in a RAID, ideal for upgrading capacity incrementally), Synology also has an extensive app eco system, though to be fair it's not something I use much personally.

You are 100% right though, at face value the price tag is a tough pill to swallow, I wanted to get it for around $900 but I don't know if that's going to happen again. I'm sure TerraMaster would get the job done just fine too.

Asustor Lockerstor is another NAS brand that beats Synology in some areas and comes in cheaper. But at the end of the day I'm sticking with what I have past experience with.

      • Agree with this, been looking for 2nd hand Synology just for the surveillance station and can't find a cheap one. I've been using HP Microserver 8 with Xpenology installed and I'm really liking the software. I can run VMs, docker and record 24/7 cctv video from my reolink wifi camera.

      • I wonder how much I can get for my broken ds1815+? I think it has the intel cpu bugs or a power supply issue as it won’t power on.

      • Same.

If you just want a basic file storage server without any bells and whistles, there's plenty of cheaper options available which will be just as good… but for those who want the Synology software, the QuickConnect service, the app support, reliability, etc… it's worth the premium.

Seems to also be available at Ninja Buy for $944.85 for eBay Plus Members using the coupon "POFF10" now also :) Discount applied at checkout.

    • You just put another $945 hole in my wallet, thank you friend :D

      • Lol! Hope you get a good use out of it :)

        • I will. Merging the contents of 2 old NAS boxes into this one and selling those for more than this has cost me :)

  • +1

This is $891.65 if you use the ebay afterpay deal which is 15% off on the computer alliance ebay.

    • Too late for me but hopefully someone else benefits from that. Equal lowest price ever I believe. Nice find.
