Looking for Feedback on SBG (Superior Building Group)

Hi Oz bargain family ,

First time posting - so please have some mercy on me :) . Just looking for some feed back/ experience story regarding SBG builder . Recently bought a land in Lyndhurst (Melbourne) and out of the quotes from different builder - SBG stands out with their inclusions and overall pricing . They have mixed reviews on different forums and just a bit nervous on signing the dotted line.

Would really appreciate your comments/feedback .

Note - Looking to build 30-32 Square meter double story house .

Thanks very much!!

  • According to their name they're superior. Can't go wrong.

  • +1

In all honesty I have never met a person who used a builder and has come out of it saying "I really enjoyed that and I'd love to do it again". It's the unfortunate nature of the industry. This applies to Neville Nobodies all the way to Metricon and Mcdonald Jones. What type of person are you? can you sign somebody up on a cheap price and manage them and the potential headaches? if so you are better off because you may have the same headaches with a big builder except you are paying 30%-40% more to cover their profit, overheads and fast cars.

Edit: They do have a large amount of negative google reviews, I'd be cautious.

  • We built with SBG in 2010. At first they were amazing David was very helpful as was Carmel. We had some delays through no fault of theirs but that’s life. Before the plaster went up I had an inspection and noticed many broken roof tiles and questioned by site supervisor. He said they’d be changed before hand over as the electricians would need to go up and so forth.
At the 1 month mark we had so many missed spots of painting that they came back to patch it up.
After 6 months of moving in we got a mould spot in a rear room. SBG went up into the roof and replaced a few tiles. He then tells me there is many broken roof tiles but he won’t replace them all as we had Foxtel installed (did not walk in the roof) so it was our fault. Another year went past and we had mould in the bathroom and kitchen ceilings. Went back to them and told them the roof tiles need to be fixed. They sent a guy to check the tiles and determined “someone had walked on the roof” so wouldn’t accept accountability.
At the 1 year mark our garage door bubbled because you have to slam it to open and close (I suspect the frame is crooked) they replaced the door but it was doing the same thing. The supervisor refused to replace the door again and just shaved the door down until it no longer got jammed. Now it’s splitting open.
Last year we had 2 roof tiles fly off the Alfresco creating water damage. Our roof tiler said he’s never seen that happen, it’s like they weren’t even hammered in. We had a plaster and painters to fix the damage and couldn’t figure why the plaster is humid. When the painter went into the roof he said the entire thing is dodgy and can collapse, there is no insulation and used internal paint for the Alfresco leaving it exposed to humidity. 10 years on the saga continues. If I didn’t love our area and our neighbours we would have sold by now.
    Wish you luck.

  • I'm in the same spot at the moment, I've got the land and I'm looking to build with SBG as well.
Docmz did you go ahead with them? and what was your experience?

  • Don't build with them. It's almost a year and just lock up stage

    • Where are you building mate? I am in the same situation, they have not done anything since a year of lock up stage, I am building in Minta

      • I am in winland, Officer

        • Has your build finished? Or still going on, how long has it been?
Is there anything you can do to get out of the contract?

          • @abee247: No changes since June 2022. If I cancel contract it will be very hard to find new builder

  • Hello guys
Its been nearly 11 months since my lock up stage with SBG.
Thinking to end contract or find other builder to continue.
    Lot of legal complications though.
