How to send gift card to a mobile no

I need to pay someone by gift card. They wouldn't accept payment in any other way. Is there a way to buy an egift card and send them via SMS? Thanks.

  • It sounds like a dodgy scam, can you elaborate?

  • They wouldn't accept payment in any other way.

    Make your purchase elsewhere then.

  • As said above this is most likely a scam.

  • As far as I'm aware, the ATO accept more than just gift cards.

  • Strongly agree with everyone who's posted so far - a common scam is to claim they are from some position of authority (ATO, Police, Bank etc) and that you have some outstanding fine / bill, and if you don't pay within 24 / 48 hours via some hard-to-trace means (usually iTunes gift card) they'll arrest you / close accounts / some other strong-arm punishment. This is wrong - any official government department or business will reject payment via gift card, and only permit credit card / sometimes PayPal / bank deposit.

Apple even have on their gift card page that gift cards can't be used to pay the ATO

App Store & iTunes Gift Cards are solely for the purchase of goods and services on the iTunes Store, Apple Books, Apple Music and the App Store. Should you receive a request for payment of a tax debt using App Store & iTunes Gift Cards outside of iTunes and the App Store, please report it to the Australian Tax Office.

Please feel free to reach out via chat if you want assistance or a second view of the message / request for payment via gift card.

    However

In the unlikely circumstance you're paying a family-member / friend that you actually know and have verified it's them (ie pre-agreed "gift-card payment for services" arrangement) you can buy gift cards from the Apple Store online and email it through to them.

    • Thanks but I don't know if they use apple products. I was thinking of something like a store gift card like target or Woolworths. Do they sell egift cards?

      • Stores like that normally do, yes.

        Examples:

        Woolworths - Email Only

Target / Coles / Kmart don't seem to sell direct, but Target linked to https://www.giftcards.com.au/, which appears to be the site for Target / Coles / Kmart / OfficeWorks

Recommend checking the official site for whatever you want the gift card for and searching for "gift cards". Most will be email delivery, but you may be able to email to yourself, get the e-voucher, take a screenshot & send to your tenants as an image at a stretch.

  • There is no scam here guys. I want to pay $50 to my tenants for some minor repair work they did in the house.

Just send them $50 via PayID or BeemIt?

      • Thanks. It didn't come to my mind.

Send them an email discounting their next rent payment. I do this frequently with my long-term tenants. The repair work would usually be tax deductible. By decreasing the rent payable you achieve the same effect as collecting the rent and then paying the tenant with one less transaction. Plus you can't forget about it at tax time and miss the deduction.
