TOP Loader Washing Machine - Suggestion Needed

Hi all,
My electrolux front loader is about to die and I am looking at going back to an top loader washing machine.

reasons why going back to top loader:
*smell from the front loader is impossible to get rid of, yes we're tried alot of things.
*normal wash time are 2.5 hours for standard wash.

I budgeting about $1000. 8-9kg range and have come up with 2 options:

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-wtg9020v-9kg-top-load-…

https://www.harveynorman.com.au/samsung-8-5kg-activ-dualwash…

anyone still use top loader or recommend one?

Mate, the title says front loader but post says top loader, may be better to edit the title

I recommend a F+P top loader, they just keep working. Bit more than your budget, but I'm sure you can bargain a bit off, https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/fisher-and-paykel-85kg-top-lo…

I buy, sell and repair appliances all day long and i'll agree with everyone here. avoid LG and samsung top loaders. If you can find a fisher paykel made in australia, buy it. will be a much better long term option.

      • thanks, would that include the top end LG/samsung models?

        • +2

Like the others have said, stay away from the Samsung. I bought one to replace my F&P that died, worst mistake. Wash quality is absolutely horrible on so many levels.

          • @storms79: thanks, i already had bad experiences with samsung fridges. Phones/Monitors Samsung are ok, white good no..

      • based on your recommendation to go for aussie made……seems like the current ones are manufactured in china. will this make any difference in terms of build quality?

        • +1

yes it does, i'd much prefer to go for a second hand but late model FP that was made in australia.

and yes, i dont like the late model LG or Samsung top loaders. I think the LG front loaders are ok. but all the samsungs are horrible.

          • @cyclical: not sure where this one is manufactured yet, but would this be a good/bad purchase based on your experience?
            https://www.billyguyatts.com.au/fisher-paykel-8-5kg-top-load…

            • @franco cozzo: Yes thats a great machine, 99% sure it was made in QLD. i have the same machine at home at the moment

              • @cyclical: cool…thanks for that. seems to be a good price too?
im really in a pickle as we noticed water under our simpson eziset750 on the weekend and were in vic so its really hard to get out & see replacement washing machines in a brick & mortar
have to make a purchase decisions more or less today…

                • @franco cozzo: is it worth buying extended warranties on the FP washers?

                  • +1

@godofpizza: 2 year warranty from factory i believe….im not really into extended warranties because of 'exclusions'
and also because of ACL providing similar guarantees that an expensive purchase like a 1K appliance should last longer than 2 years

                  • +2

@godofpizza: normally most people say no, but if its for 5 years, i think its probably worth it. ive never looked into the extended warrantys. service calls will cost $200-400 for FP models.

I love my F+P. When I left home I just got what my parents had (albeit smaller, but newer) and have no complaints with theirs or mine.

*smell from the front loader is impossible to get rid of

    What smell?

    • Yeah, not sure what's going on here. We've had a couple of top loaders, with 2 kids, and never had a problem with smells.

As far as a top loader, also recommend F&P, pretty bulletproof and plenty of parts and people to fix them if needed down the track.

    • Probably the smell fabrics get from being damp too long. Maybe OP isn't leaving the detergent tray and door open after use to allow the machine to dry out and prevent mould. 2.5hrs for a standard wash is also weird. Not sure if it's an Electrolux thing or a setting on their end.

      • 2.5hrs for a standard wash

Age of COVID, you wash twice to be sure!

      • i had whirlpool model before the electrolux, it normal cycle only took <55 minutes. unfortunately it was taken by my room mate when he moved out.

Have you cleaned and rinsed you machine as per manufacturer instructions.
You supposed to drain water from sump plug(bottom hose) and also use descaler to clean the machine regularly.

Also if you using wrong detergent(only use HE) the gaskets in the front can get mold. wipe them clean with cloth and moist vinegar/baking soda.
Also is your laundary well ventilated?

Buying new machine wont fix the problem

  • I'd put my vote in for Fisher and Paykel.

I've used two of them in my life, both bought second hand, one for $150, the second for $50. They work amazingly great, 5 years+ so far without issue… and this is second-hand and cheap as chips. I admittedly don't know much about this area, but if you can use second-hand products for over 10 years and never have them fail… that's pretty great quality in my books.

  • …perfect timing. just found water under our machine this morning and was going to post this exact thread…sounds like F & P is the way to go….were looking for a 7kg - 8.5kg top loader….any good deals anywhere atm?

    secondhand Speed Queen?

    • Very good suggestion, they are one the best if you can find one. I saw Maytag for less than $1500 at Costco 5years ago, should have bought it. The same model was selling for triple the price elsewhere

      • does costco sell cheap washers?

        • Yup they do I've seen Lg and Samsung regularly

  • ….not having much luck….how about you op?
seems like every machine including the F&P i was looking at gets a fair share of terrible reviews…samsung, LG, simpson all get bad reviews too
so far i have a list of brands not to buy but no options in the 1k range that look good 😥

not really, this lockdown is going to make it hard to shop around.

i might have to hold on for a 20% off sale and budget towards the ~$1500 range washer with a longer extended warranty.

Saw few models in Costco around $750-$100 mark

      • Any luck finding a decent washer in the 1k range? I’ve been holding off for a while, but may just have to pull the trigger.
