Replacement for 1st Gen Sony RX100 Compact Camera

Hi all,

About 8 years ago, we purchased a RX100 when they first came out. It has served as really well - multiple overseas trips, family events, the first few years of my kid's lives etc.
However, it has been dropped one too many times and now only works occasionally (I've tried all the common 'fixes' on the net, but nothing seems to help). So, we've decided to look for a replacement.

We are not really 'camera people' and the main use case is something portable that can take excellent stills / video on auto, but still have a good range of manual settings if ever we want to use those (my wife does sometimes muck around with those settings). As mentioned the RX100 was perfect for our needs until it stopped working.

Main usage is not much changed from above either- kids growing up, family trips / events. Being able to record good video is a bonus also (doesn't need to be 4K, happy with 1080p at watchable FPS). Would like something that has an all day battery (or close to it). Don't really care about stuff like wifi / bluetooth etc.

Budget is around $600.

Thanks in advance for your help

RX100 II is only $699 (probably will be cheaper with a sale)

Canon G9X is under $500. Similar 1" sensor.

Depends on how brand and price sensitive you are.

    • Thanks. Happy with Sony, but also happy to try a different brand. Fairly price sensitive - I guess I assumed that a current gen RX100 would be well out of budget

      • RX100 II is still produced new. If you want the most recent release (VII Ultra) is like $2k.

I'd suggest giving the Canon a try.

    • The original g5x is also just under $500

      • That's an interesting possibility - a little bigger than the RX100 but looks like it meets all our requirements and is in price range. Thanks

  • Is this a good time to buy camera? I have been postponing buying one for last few months. Hope things will settle down by Boxing day.

$600 mobile phones usually have amazing cameras these days. Would suit all your needs plus you have a new phone as well.

  • RX100 MK3 if you can push up to it. Maybe look around for a used/refurbished one.

Easily their best revision of that series. The MK2 wasn’t that much of an upgrade but the MK3 was a big step up. Would still recommend the MK2 if you can’t though.

One thing I would consider is if the RX100 battery is the same in the Mk1 and the MK2/3, you will have a spare battery. Very useful if you are somewhere like Europe in winter where the cold really affects the battery, it is good to have a spare. The external chargers are about $30 ish.

Unfortunately Sony pushed their prices way up when the MK4 came out. Somehow the new ones are almost 2K

I got the MK3 for about $700 at JB + a $150 voucher to spend at the sony online store. Was my first proper OZB experience! Got a spare battery and charger from the online store with the voucher. Then I went overseas and got the GST back! Crazy to see JB is selling the MK3 that came out 5 years ago for $900!

  • Thanks for the feedback all. Wife made the call to go with the Canon G5X. With shipping, Harvey Norman ended up being cheapest for us

  • Probably should update this- we are really happy with the G5X, a bit bulkier than the RX100 but superior in every other way. Thanks for all the suggestions.
