My oven kinda exploded... shattering the glass all over the floor. Anyone else experience that?

Hi all, so being Sunday morning in ISO…. decided to bake bread as you do lol. Pre-heated the oven and after about 8 minutes heard a big bang. So my Oven's glass has totally shattered from the inside of the oven and it ejected glass from the sides and scattered it all over the floor.

Took a few pics and have left it as is, will send to my Building management to assess and see what they say. Do you think it'll be covered under warranty? It is about 3 years old. Or you reckon the manufacturer gonna pull a dodgy and think it is my fault as a consumer?

The Brand is from ILVE. I'm sure the model number is somewhere, will have to check.

UPDATE: So updated Building management with the serial number etc with additional pictures when I opened up the door… but dayummmmm so much glass everywhere. It is still covered under Warranty and apparently this is the 3rd time this has happened to people in my apartment block… and we only have a small number of apartments in this block. It'll be replaced but obviously with COVID restrictions this may delay any replacements to the door and the repairs neccessary, hopefully it is just the door and not the whole unit but we shall see.

UPDATE: 2: it has been fixed. Covered under warranty as it was only 3 years old so no charge to us…phew… Replaced the front panel door with a new one. Unit is working well now. I can bake more bread lol

I've heard of it happening with ovens, microwaves and even frameless shower screens. It's usually down to a fault in the glass itself rather than user error so I'd assume it should be covered under warranty, or if not, at the very least, insurance but definitely should be taken up with the manufacturer first so make sure you get the make and model number of the oven and any other relevant information about its purchase if you have it.

    • I think showers are prone to breaking because of square corners, not really installed correctly. They can weaken over time (usually in the first few months or weeks) then suddenly break.

An oven though, that's crazy. Model would be very useful.

      • I have had a shower screen glass explode. It was frameless and not being used at the time, thankfully..
Glazier who replaced it said it is common with non laminated glass in shower screens. He refused to replace it with the same type of glass, would only use laminated.
Google "what causes safety glass to explode" for a lot of explanations.
OP. Building management should have access to the purchase source of the oven and they are the prime source for any warranty/faulty goods enquiry. You would have to be doing something very wrong to break one of them in normal use. You may find you are not the first to experience this.

  • What Oven?

  • How old is the oven?

….It is about 3 years old

      • Sorry I missed that. Hopefully still under warranty. It happened to my cooktop before.

  • I have a Gas Oven. Hope this doesn't happen to me. :-o

Improperly annealed glass. A lot of stored energy. Your oven is at its peak shattering potential when the temperature is greatly different inside and out.

It's probably a batch error. There are usually recall notices sent to owners but it is a rental so it may have gone unnoticed.

(Either that or loud shrill voice.)

  • I slight scratch during cleaning will weaken the hardened glass. This weakness will appear at high temp.

  • Unfortunately it’s not that uncommon. Happened to us too.

  • My sister's glass door exploded for no obvious reason. 12 month old. High end brand - Asko or Miele IIRC.

  • happened to my Ilve oven a few years ago. Spontaneous and Random- the thing wasn't even on when it happened. Had to get it fixed at my own cost- the thing was out of warranty.
