Yamaha WR250R - Brand New

Just wondering if anyone has purchased a Yamaha WR250R brand new from a dealer (I'm in NSW)? The Yamaha website RRP is $9,699 but I'm just wondering whether this is negotiable at the actual dealer and if so how much? I dont have many around me which is why I want to arm myself before heading out to buy and negotiate on the front foot. Likewise second hand is not great value and limited supply unfortunately i.e. high K's and a high price and I plan to keep it till it's dead. Also if you have purchased brand new can you divulge the price you paid?

Thanks in advance

  • Bikes are in high demand (up over 25% this year) and most shops will make nothing on the sale of new bikes so don't expect much.

Second hand is usually good value, but prices will be boosted by the upswing in demand too.

    • Bummer, might have to wait and save up more unfortunately. I can't justify the second hands at 8k with 10,000km vs brand new at 9.5k. They seem to be like Toyota Hiluxes lol

  • There’s a shortage of preloved bikes for sale, particularly WR250Rs. Perhaps it’s a renewed focus on local holidaying due to travel restrictions, or maybe people spending up their super withdrawals, and I expect COVID is also causing some shortages on new bikes. Not a great environment to negotiate a good price, but I suspect it’ll change when govt starts cutting back COVID assistance. If you can wait that long. Good luck.

    • Yes that's what I was thinking. There is only a handful for sale Australia wide second hand and they aren't at the best price at the moment. It has to be a temporary boost in demand.

    • There's a lot of people pulling 10k out of their super to buy bikes because scomo said it's ok. That's why the demand is up. It's a terrible idea IMO.

  • Matt?

    • Daaaaamoon

  • So I am not the only person seeing the large price increase in the used dirt bike market.

Also looking at the WR250R - 5k would have gotten you one with less than 1500km about a year ago.

    • Dirt bikes (incl WR) are especially popular. Maybe people looking for outdoor entertainment during covid

      • I guess the stimulus is working….

        • It's part stimulus and also part manufacturers reducing their output and stock. Combined it has given a very inflated 'fake' demand.

    • I just chose not to buy at all, I cannot justify it in this market. I'll stick with the hobbies I already have this year and wait for things to calm down till next year.

      • Yep, I am not buying anything either. Prices are ridiculous.
Will give it 12 month's or so until it hopefully goes back to normal - even tempted to sell my current bike and rebuy later.

        • My local mountain bike store was empty as well. I went there a few weeks ago and I thought they were closing down, but the sales rep was saying that people were purchasing any bike they could get their hands on and paying full retail.

          • @TheBilly: Paying full retail, I have never heard of such a disgusting thing….more like gone full Re$#4d

    • Sales of new off-road bikes in second qtr this year were up 25% (from memory) on same qtr last year, causing dealers to run short of stock. ATV sales were up 45%, but partly due to new regulations. Add to that Covid means they struggle to get more stock. If you can wait, that‘s not a bad strategy, but it may take quite a while for the market to reset prices back down. No one’s going to drop their price until they get desperate to sell. I’m glad I got my WR last year, it’s a great bike.
