Timeshift Live TV Recommendations/Thoughts?

Got the Sony X9500 last year. Not super happy with it overall, but the picture is pretty nice.

Along with some widespread sound dropouts, the single biggest issue we have in our house is the lack of timeshift/record function.

What's the best solution in set top box/PVR world these days?

Can something like a shield get live TV/record happening without too much stuffing around?

Whatever the suggestions, the solution really needs to be a set and forget deal. Bonus points for something that has all the usual apps built in so we don't have to change remotes etc.

Double points for something wife friendly.

Help please!

What's the best solution in set top box/PVR world these days?

Basically as a bove, FetchTV mighty. quad tuner, big HDD, all the apps like netflix/youtube and catchup apps etc

Guide data is 'free', and if you want you can add streaming paytv channels (not required). No contract for paytv packages, so you can add them for 1 month ie over the school holidays and then turn them off.

The only complaint people have is that you have to pay $1 once off to create a account. But just factor that in as part of the purchase price.

  • Is there a need with catch-up apps?

    • I've found not everything is available, and often not available until sometimes well after the fact, when all we really want to do is pause or go back a bit so when the kids are stuffing around going to sleep while wife it trying to watch batchy. Pause tv, warm milk, unpause.

Seriously would not have bought this tv had I have researched the no timeshift function first.

      • Interesting
All the networks advertise that they upload all prime time programs to their catch up with 24 hours (often less)
My experience has always been if i missed a show i can watch it on catch up with 2-3 hours of the broadcast ending.

only exceptions are where they are not permitted to show / stream online due to broadcasting rights agreements.

It's really more about watching stuff live, and if the kids stuff around and a chunk gets missed, being able to rewind it back and pick up again

  • Thanks for the suggestion, doing a bit of reading now.

Can anyone confirm if Disney is on there yet?

Any issues with 4k? I assume no upscaling, but displays native 4k stuff ok like netflix?

Plex and casting a no go?

We use Fetch TV Mighty and Mini (different rooms). This is mostly for wife as she watches a lot of FTA trashy shows and like to fast forward through them.

I also use Plex with a HDHomeRun (silicondust.com) . Works great! Scorptec have HDHomeRun listed, both models and they are currently unavailable. New models are coming, sooner or later.

What specifically does your wife struggle with in regard to this?

    • It's always going to be an issue if she can't just pick up a remote and find what she needs without having to change inputs, or turn an extra box on.

If sony would just enable recording (and assume timeshift go hand in hand) it wouldn't be an issue. All the apps we use are right in the app section, TV is right there with a TV button, and it all works well via voice control etc too. It's BS that all the cheap TV's do it and sony don't.

I just want milk that tastes like real milk.

      • Sounds like buyer regret. As others have said, you will need to buy a Fetch or similar device and set it up so it is your 'primary' source device, but I think you will still need to turn both devices on, so two remotes.

I'm still not sure what 'wife friendly' is though.

        • Absolutely buyer regret.

You can program a Fetch remote to turn the TV on and off and also change the volume.
