Best Value GPU to Match The 34" 1440p Xiaomi Display?

Hey all,

Wondering what your thoughts were on the best GPU for the new Xiaomi display?
Currently on an i5-6600k so looking to slightly overbuy the GPU to compensate for the CPU bottleneck until I need to upgrade the rest.

Understand everyone is on the 'wait for the 3xxx' train, but tossing up what's most worthwhile considering performance/value.
It seems like the performance/value point is the 2060 Super? Happy to wait though.

I'm thinking:

a) Jump on a cheap 2060 Super - I think this is the minimum GPU to get some decent performance on the display. Looks like its has sold lately for around $500 give or take (Galax) , just a matter of waiting for the right deal. Not sure if there is much of a different with the other manufacturers for the price increase.
b) Jump on a cheap 2070 Super - Think is probably the more solid option with the display, although it seems more of a nice to have given the price to performance difference. I would like this down to the 600-650 region but not sure if that is realistic?
c) Wait for a decent price on the 3070/3060 - Not sure how long this could be but sounds like it could be 6-12 months away; also not sure on what the pricing would be but already stretching the intended budget here. Would it be much more than $700?

2070 super , that’s what I’m using . Yes the mid range 3000 series cards will be 6 to 12 months away, they always release top of the line ones first.

  • Option B or C. If you want all the eye candy with a 3440x1440 screen you need the best video card money can buy. I'm running a x34p with a 1080TI (roughly the same as a 2070 super?) and I can either run medium settings at 3440x1440 or higher settings at 2560 x 1080 on the Witcher 3, I guess it will depend on what games though.

  • If you need one now grab a 2070 Super. I got mine for $700 from one of the sales with the new Call of Duty. Otherwise wait for the 3xxx series cards. You could even wait for a 2nd hand 2080 Super/2080ti when the new cards are released. Using mine with a 27" 1440p 144hz, decent frames over 100 for most games. You got the 34" 144hz 1440p Xiaomi but don't want to dish out for a decent card? Interesting.

    • Any idea what might be considered a good price for the 2070S going forward? At the moment I've seen the Galax around $750 but nothing else remotely close. Looks like the historical low was towards $650 but it hasn't previously gotten past that.

A 1060 6Gb is capable of 60FPS at 1440p in AC:Origins, FC5, FF XV. If all you want is the minimum to get through a 1660 would be enough.

In 30-odd years of gaming, I've found the best bang for buck & resale value is invariably in the second best widget on the market. If you picked up a 2070 Super now there will be someone who will pay 50% of its value in 12mths time (ie: the cost of a 1660).

Who knows, you may even find there's a similar gap in real-world performance from 2070 to 3070 as there was from 1070 to 2070.

edit I see a lot of people buying Freesync monitors with G-Sync cards. Is G-Sync not worth the extra?

    • I bought a 1660 Super a few months ago when I was convinced I only needed a 1080p card forevermore. Skeptical now on the future-proofness of the card now given the new monitor, and looking to sell it off whilst the market value isn't far off what I initially paid. I think that is the right decision for now? Looking for a medium-long term card, which can chuck out some more extra frames when I get around to the CPU upgrade.

      • If you sell it now, upgrade to a 2070 Super then upgrade that in a year, you're going to be out the cost of two 1660s.
If you hang onto it for a year then jump to a 3070 or whatever, you'll be out the cost of one 1660.
Were it me, I'd prob wait until the monitor arrives before deciding.

The benchmarks I watched earlier for the 1060 were all 1440p at max settings. The games hovered around the 45fps mark.
Turning off AA & FA puts them all above the 60fps average.
Whether or not that's tolerable for a year is your answer, I guess.

        • If i went for the 2070s there would be no going up to the 3070. I think the 2070s puts out enough to be good enough for long term and then lowering setting where necessary. At the moment set to sell the 1660 super a little under my purchase price so only losing less than 50 bucks.

I think my budget would cap at 800 max, supposing eventually a 3070 would be under that.

          • @gmail92: Sorry. I forgot the 1660 was only new.
As soon as I find a shortened 2070 Super under 240mm for a not-stupid price I'll be upgrading to that.

            • @BinaryPirate: What do you consider a not-stupid-price?

I guess the question now is whether to shoot for the Galax 3 Fan 2070S going for $750, or to hang tight for a for the 3070.

              • @gmail92: Is the performance gap even worthwhile between the 2060 Super and 2070 Super?
Given the 2060 super looks like sub 600 (maybe $500-550) and the 2070 super is a good $250 above that.

              • @gmail92: There's a Zotac 2070 Super Mini OC on Amazon for AUD$730.
                That's a non-stupid price, given the RRP for the 2070S is $699

    • Gsync is not worth the extra. You can't disable vsync with gsync either.

      • Boooo.

        • It's done in hardware do it's not as bad but it does contribute to latency.

5700xt imo - ive noticed around 10% performance increase since launch due to drivers. consoles use it too so yeah - i bet games in future will favour it.

  • I think if I can pick up a 2060 super for 500-550 that would justify saving the 200-250+ for the marginal performance increase which can probably go towards the next GPU.
Otherwise if there a good deal on the 2070 super ~650 that might be alright.
And if I can live with the old 960, see how long I can hold out for and hopefully the 3060/3070 is out by then.

    • Shopping Express have a 2070 not super for that price in the open box section.
