Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Vs S20+

The Oppo Reno 5G is currently $600. The S20+ 5G is currently $1200 in the Samsung Education store (with the possibility of going down to $1050 if the 35% sales happen again.

Cameras seem to be of similar quality, maybe better on the Reno given the true optical zoom of 5x is stronger than tthe S20's 1.07x (true optical not hybrid optical).
Given it seems the downgraded chip of Exynos 990 seems like it could actually be comparable to the SD 855, I'm just wondering whether you think the S20's features are worth the price difference.

From what I can tell the main draws of the S20+ would be:

  • 120hz refresh rate
  • Waterproofing
  • Quicker updates
  • An extra year of software support?
  • UFS 3.0
  • Supposedly better OS (Though I like iOS and maybe Oppo can be fixed with a launcher?)
  • A brighter HDR10+ screen (not sure if ill notice this on a phone)
  • Extra 4GB of RAM (12GB - probably overkill tho)

However these do come at the cost of 128GB of storage and flash on the selfie camera.

For me the lack of 120hz refresh on the Oppo is the main factor making the decision hard. Do you think these advantages on the S20+ have a real world difference and are they worth an extra $450-600?

The updates while they are getting better on the Samsung end are a step in the right direction and is getting better. The Chinese brands are for the most part pretty good (Huawei, Xiaomi, Oneplus), HOWEVER, Oppo and Vivo lag behind the pack when it comes to updates to ColorOS. Which one has a better OS? Depends. OneUI from Samsung is getting cleaner and less cluttered, more akin to stock Android but has some minor quirks. And since it is a newer device you'll get more updates than the Oppo.

Waterproofing is nice to have, not a deal breaker for me though. The extra RAM is nice to have but at a minimum 8GB for Android devices is a must. Also storage I like to have 128gb at a minimum.

The Samsung has the better screen yes, brighter and more vivid. They do make panels that are the best in the business, though the screen on the Oppo isn't bad either. The full screen of the Oppo with the pop up selfie camera is nice to view videos n content though the durability of that mechanism to pop the camera up is something to be concerned about.

It sucks that the Exynos is an inferior chip to the SD865 that the Americans got in their S20's… which is a shame for us, could be a deal breaker for some? But I just live with it with my own S20. Though if your comparing the the Samsung Exynos VS Oppo SD, both should perform decently in Real life situations n use.

Next is the cameras, the zoom I feel on the S20 was a bit of a sneaky marketing scheme from Samsung, while the Ultra got some good true optical zoom the S20+ and S20 got stiffed with a Hybrid zoom as you said. Apart from that the S20's camera is solid and video is much better on the S20+ than the Oppo Zoom. Unless Zoom is top priority (it is a bit creepy though lol) then the S20+ still outperforms the Oppo Zoom 10x in my opinion.

Value is subjective, that 120 hz screen is nice and fluid but it kills the battery, though Samsung did chuck in a BIG battery to compensate for that. For me, is it worth the extra compared to the Oppo? Probably not if you do it in $$ terms. But as with all flagship Android devices they will drop in price faster than an Apple iPhone. But do you want to wait and wait? There will always be a better device around the corner. From my own experience the fluidity of the screen especially playing games and interacting with the UI is a nice experience VS the usual 60 hz screens out there.

Gosh that was long. Hope that answers your concerns though!

    • Thanks for the knowledgeable and detailed response!

  • I bought a phone with 144hz refresh rate. I cant use it, meaning I'm not the type of phone user to spend an hour playing a racing game or pubg on the phone. its not essential.
What I have got out of the phone is the updated camera, which is amazing compared to my previous, 3 year old, single lens rear camera phone.

    • I dont spend a ton of time playing mobile games either, but do you not find much benefit from the higher refresh rate when scrolling and navigating apps and UI?

      • It's set to 60 by default to save battery.
        Vivo iqoo neo 3.
        I use 30% battery a day.
If I travel or take a bus, which isn't happening in the last 6 months and probably 2 years, I'd use the higher refresh rate to enjoy. When I play videos it asks to switch to a smoother rate. Which is nice.
97% of the time it's not used. I'll warm around to it if I had time

  • Doesn't sound like it is twice as good as the Oppo, so IMHO that's your answer.

  • Any Snapdragon 865 phone , with 90 or 120 refresh rate AMOLED and headphone jack?
