  • I do not know anything about laptops/computers, unfortunately. Can someone please share their thoughts on:

I have no other need for a laptop, except for my online classes…

I'd pass on it. Very old laptops can have a variety of issues, n u'll end up scrapping it in the end.

My suggestion is a Chromebook or an older model of the Microsoft Surface Pro with keyboard accessory. The Surface Pro 4 used with keyboard accessory are selling on Ebay and you should be able to snag a deal for your $350 budget.

One that is a decent Chromebook is the Lenovo Chromebook C340, slightly over your budget.

    Again shop around.

That’s a super weird thing to say, implying that other answers aren’t honest or people would lie about this?

        • +1

that applies everywhere aint it …

        • It's not wrong, just weird.

        • I did not read it as though he was implying anything..nor that it was weird….just appreciating that the reply was honest and upfront ..maybe it’s just your level of perception ?

    Maybe https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lenovo-s340-14-inches-chromeb…

Otherwise my choice would be a second-hand Lenovo X1 Carbon 1st/3rd gen for that price.

    • thanks a lot, Neo!

Yep Lenovo X1 carbon refurbished of Ebay will be far better value than a chromebook

Honestly, try to spend at least $500-600 for a reasonably decent laptop that you can keep for the next few years. Anything new $350 (except Chromebooks) is just rubbish unless you try to buy good secondhand laptops.

Might an iPad do the job? You can use any bluetooth keyboard from ebay with it.

    • thanks, mate!
yeah, Zoom website says it works on ipads and a little bigger screen as well…

      • You may find an iPad more suitable. You can get Word and Excel for it too. It’ll cloud sync your files with OneDrive, I think you get a few gb free.

  • How is this not an ad for his shop?

    • I am a "her" and no its not.

    • What shop?

You can get some decent 2nd hand macbook pros on facebook marketplace for around $350-400 mark.
Might be a few years old but the macbooks tend to get the latest OS updates, and they tend to be built solidly.

Just make sure you inspect first and if possible get them to demo to make sure everything is working properly.

Alternatively, a new ipad could also do the job, if you are mainly video conferencing and consuming videos.
If you are typing a lot and also editing a lot of documents and handling lots of files the limitations of the ipad os may get a bit frustrating though.
