Why Is The Canon 5DS So Cheap from HK Sites

I'm looking for an upgrade for my old 6D.

Currently interested in the canon 5DS.

Overseas sites like Tecobuy, Toby deals, t-dimension or Becex tech are selling the camera for around $1500.

Australian sites like Parramatta, camerapro are selling it for $3000+.
BH photo from the US is selling for us$3000+.

Anyone has any ideas why HK sites are selling it so cheap? I thought $1500 is the price range for entry level full frame? It feels like the $3000 range is a more proper for this camera?

Am I missing something here? Should I pull the trigger at the $1500 price point for the 5DS?

My previous camera gears (including the old 6D) were all grey import and I never had any problem with them.

Thanks.

  • I'd say 6DMkII is the entry to full frame. The 5DS series were specifically "giant sensor" models aimed at a very specific market. The R5 mirrorless is aiming to take that spot in the lineup so I wouldn't be surprised if the 5DS gets discontinued in the near future.

But hey, if you can get a 5DS for $1500, I'd say jump at it.

    • Thanks. A 'canon 5ds' google shows the first 4 sponsored ads at the $1500 range. It's seriously tempting, considering I paid $1600 for my old Canon 6D long time ago (grey import). http://prntscr.com/trlh8b

There was a comment earlier today (I can't recall the thread). They purchased a camera from China at around $400 less than available retail, expecting it to be brand new.
They ended up recieving a second hand product.

Hopefully they will see this and share their story.

    • Thanks, would love to hear their comment. Heard not-so-good reviews from sites like Toby, Teco…, but if I check out using paypal, should I assume I am protected?

It's not just cameras, nearly all electronics are much cheaper in Hong Kong due to the high level of competition and no tax on goods. Grey import sites here in Aus are actually much more expensive compared to buying it directly in Hong Kong. That's how grey import sites such as Tobydeals make profit, through cheap imports from HK and reselling in more expensive countries such as AU.

Take your Canon 5DS for example, I did a quick search on a hong kong pricing website (similar to Price Hipster) and it only goes for around $1300 AUD.
