What is Difference Between Samsung EVO Plus vs Select:

Amazon exclusive repackaging of the EVO Plus

  • +5

Make sure you purchase this from Amazon US as posted by the OP. I purchased from another seller within AU a month ago and it was not genuine. I wanted 2 day delivery rather 2 weeks from Amazon US, so I took the risk. Return process was easy though. Repurchased from Amazon US and it was genuine.

    • +1

I had the same issue a could of weeks ago

      • +1

I had the same issue on eBay, fakes everywhere.

    • how could you tell it wasn't genuine?
      was it a fake SD?

      • +4

Simply run h2testw to check capacity and speeds. If you're not getting sustained speeds of at least 70MB/s or the full capacity, it's fake.

      • +4

Samsung also has a software you can down load that test if it is genuine or not. Also the model number advertised was /AM america but the fake one was /CN.

      • Also check for the edge colour , fakes usually have black edge and genuine has white edge.

    • +1

      Good advice.
EVO select is Amazon branding. Anyone else selling it must be selling fakes, seconds, or bought it themselves from amazon

  • Can I use it with my Nintendo Switch?

    • +6

Yes. I'm using it on my switch atm.

Genuine questions: How is this compared to Sandisk? Also is this made in Korea just like their SSD counterpart? Sandisk one is made in China so if this is made in Korea I'll switch to this

    • From my understanding most Samsung SD cards are now make in china as well
I would get the Samsung one simply because Samsung SD cards usually are faster in read / write speed
(EVO and Select are U3 rated)
To get the same level SD cards in other brands are usually more expensive than Samsung
[eg. Sandisk U3 will need to get the extreme series]

      • +2

It really depends how you use your SD card.
        https://www.mymemory.co.uk/blog/a1-vs-a2-sandisk-microsd-car…

You need to look at both "U" and "A" ratings. If you write a lot of sequential data e.g. video recording than A2 card won't improve performance. If you write a lot of random data, A2 is a much better card! (higher IOPS rating for both reading and writing).

    • My Samsung cards are all made in the Philippines. I'd guess that these are too. But I wish Korea made their own cards instead of outsourcing.

      • Oh, right
All the samsung SD card I purchased where in "Chinese package" so I thought they were made in China
        But after using Google Translate

The 64GB and 128GB cards were made in the Philippines

The 256GB card were made in Korea
        https://imgur.com/gallery/MEReSL5

        • Aw my 256gb evo plus isn't made in Korea… Philippines again. Wish it was though.

          • @Valowick: My most recent EVO Pluses (128GB bought from Officeworks six months ago) are Philippines, as are my older 64GB ones. My even older non-Plus 64GB EVO is made in Korea.

Does it matter though unless you're trying to boycott certain countries for political reasons? Other than that it only seems significant as a way to identify fakes in some cases (e.g. a certain SKU may only be made in Philippines whereas a fake may say Korea).

            • +1

@Jabba the Hutt: Just checked on the manufacture date
my Made in Korea one was manufactured in late 2018
and those Made in the Philippines one were in mid 2019

Probably they have moved their production site to the Philippines last year

            • -1

@Jabba the Hutt: Is it wrong to want to support more prudent decentralized manufacturing where companies aren't using low-tax havens and outsourcing their own friends and families? Korean products by Korean companies, please. Same goes for Japan, America, Australia, England, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Italy, Spain, etc… When I can I buy from companies that support us.

              • @Valowick: I don’t know how this is offensive. Is abusive exploitive companies that outsource your job desirable?

                • @Valowick: Favouring certain countries of origin for political reasons, notwithstanding the issue of supply chain complexity, is fine with me. Was asking whether there is a different reason, for example product quality, thinking maybe someone had tested the cards and found the Korean ones superior to the Philippine ones or vice versa.

    • From personal experience, using those cards in Raspberry Pi's, a couple of Samsung Evo ones died on me in less than a year, the Sandisk Ultra ones I used since then are still going strong several years in.

      • Yeah I had a 128GB Samsung Evo Plus die on me the other day. I used it infrequently on my rpi for recalbox. I'm pretty sure it was only about a year old. Can't find the order on Amazon, so who knows where it came from and how genuine it is.

        • Mine were from Shopping Express. Pretty high likelihood they were genuine.

        • Well I have to take that back. I purchased a new card reader (Ugreen) which arrived today. With that I was able to format and run a full test with F3. My old "reliable" card reader can go to the bin I suppose.

  • Does anyone use these in their dash cam? I have heard that only endurance do well in dash cams.

    • +2

I am using one (64gb) from last 4 years, no issues at all

      • thanks for confirming!

        • +1

Just double-check that your dashcam can use a SD card this big. A few I've come across can only take a 32GB or 64GB card at the most.

    • +2

I'm using a Samsung EVO Plus 64Gb in my Garmin dashcam and so far have not encountered any issues. Samsung makes the best flash storage!

  • Showing as $54.61 + $7.16 Delivery

    • Make sure the seller is Amazon US and you're choosing normal delivery

I just placed an order now with no issues

      • +1

        delivery fee is still there.

        • Sorry just realised you need Prime for the free delivery - can't edit my comment

      • Do you get the $7.16 delivery charge without prime?

        • +2

Yeah, you need prime for free delivery from Amazon US/Global store (just updated the title).

You can pay for a month's prime for $6.99 or use the free trial, rather than paying $7.16 for delivery.

  • Newbie in CashRewards here, I bought this microSD via cashrewards link but did not get any cashrewards 😢. Did I do something wrong or is thisnitem not eligible for cash rewards?

    • It can take a while for orders to appear on CashRewards. Even ineligible orders show in the list, they show a red mark.

  • Is this better than this Sandisk 256GB microSDXC https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0758NHWS8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i… for use with a Nintendo switch though?

    • This one would be better due to being U3 speeds.

As an example, this forum post on reddit demonstrates up to 3x speed improvement on U3 sd cards. (I assume nci files are like images, from rooting / cracking the Switch. I wouldn't recommend, but they've done the legwork for comparison and this is a good usecase

Bayonetta 2 opening load time after starting new game, before opening cutscene starts to play
u1 microSD: game mounted as XCI load times - 45 seconds
u3 microSD: game mounted as XCI load times - 18 seconds

u1 microSD: .NSP load times - 12 seconds
u3 microSD: .NSP load times - 10 seconds
Internal NAND load times - 9 seconds

.NSP installation time for Resident Evil Revelations 2
      U1 MicroSD: 53 minutes 40 seconds
      U3 MicroSD: 16 minutes 47 seconds.

      • Write times would be 3x faster on U3, but read times would be similar on both U1 & U3 cards

        • Read times, in the first section, show to be faster as well. "Game loaded as XCI load times" were around 2.5x faster

  • Just bought one for my DSLR camera, thanks OP

  • Was about to buy a 256gb Evo Plus from eBay for $70.
Glad I checked OzBargain first, thanks.

  • Just ordered one. Thanks OP.
