Coffee Grinder Recommendation

I am currently brewing V60 Pour Over and use a Rhinowares grinder which just isnt doing the job for me. It produces way too many fines and I end up with a mudslide in my brew no matter the grind setting. I also notice that it doesn't seem to maintain that setting and you basically have to clean it and adjust it every grind.

So I am in need of an upgrade. Originally I was going to get a Breville Smart Grinder, but I've gone against it because I am the only coffee drinker in the house, I don't own a coffee machine and pour over has been my go to drink lately. I also dont want another appliance on the bench.

Can someone recommend me a decent grinder without going to the Lido/Commandante route just because I dont want to spend that much on a hand grinder. My budget is probably around 150 or so.

I've been looking at the following

Timemore C2 $109 - looks good although few internal plastic parts which doesnt really worry me, or should it?
Zassenhaus Quito $180 - expensive, and cant really find any reviews on it.

Would these grinders with their stainless steel burrs etc be a vast improvement over the current Rhinowares garbage?

My first recommendation for a V60 hand grinder would be the Commandante V60 Mk3, Kinu M47 or Weber HG-1 (which, BTW, you can now add an aftermarket motor to!) but I totally get the budget consideration.

For <$150, I would stick with the Timemore C2 and, with the $30-40 you save against your target budget, buy some nice beans 😉

Apparently the niche zero is a good choice for pour over.

Unfortunately your budget means you're gonna get an average grinder regardless.

  • I've had this hand grinder for a while
It's produced pretty consistent grinds for pourover. Fairly quick too. Although it's no Commandante, it's quite good for the price over your entry level garbage grinders. No plastic pieces either

  • I have heard good things about the Timemore C2, you could also look at the "Knock" range of grinders which are an affordable alternative to Commandante or Kinu.
I currently have a tall porlex (upgrading to C40) which has ceramic burs and basically any bur set grinder will be vastly better than a bladed grinder.
If you wanted to delve in Commandante, some smaller shops have it for around $350-400 (Five senses, wolf roasters and clandesto).

  • I bought the sunbeam em0440 which retails for $99.
I am using it for espresso with my sunbeam em6900 and it works ok for me using double wall filters.
I can't speak about its performance for pour over grinding results though, but it's in your price range.
It is still another appliance though, although perhaps with a smaller footprint than the smart grinder.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I saw aliexpress had the Timemore C2 on sale for $78 bucks so I took the punt on that just to see how it goes. Now to just wait 2 months for it to show up in the post lol.

It's a couple of years later - if you're reading this, can you give a review?

I've since replaced it with a Kingrinder K4

I still use the Timemore for Pour Over just so I dont have to keep adjusting grind settings - but if you're thinking of using it for anything else. Look elsewhere.

The Kingrinder is a solid piece of kit though. Grinds for espresso nicely with plenty of adjustment. Basically a poor mans 1zpresso

        • Thanks for the update! You've saved me lots of money and time :) I will look into the Kingrider as I've not heard of this brand.

  • Baratza Encore

  • I’ve used a hand grinder- porlex tall that does the job quickly with various sized grind settings
