Can Anyone Recommend a Outdoor Wi-Fi Extender

Hey Oz Fam,

I'm trying to find a user friendly and budget friendly outdoor wifi extender that will run on POE (power over ethernet).

The sparky we are using mentioned the Ubiquiti pro Access point, but has an RRP of $260 and all the extender will be doing most of the time is allowing us to control garden lights (2.4 GHz is all that is needed), so was keen on using a cheaper option like:

  1. TP-Link EAP110 @ $74, or
  2. Knock off Ubiquiti AP @ $70

Any feedback appreciated.

Cheers

  • Just in case your search function is out of order https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/wifi%20extender?t=f

    • cheers i did search, but all recent ones seemed to be aimed at internal options and the 2nd post onwards is from 6 years ago…

Don't get a single Ubiqiti AP, it makes no sense to use them unless you are going to adopt a bunch of Ubiquiti kit and use a Unifi Controller, etc. to manage it all.

    • You can easily manage a single Ubiquiti AP using the mobile phone app.

      • Sure, I agree. I didn't say it wasn't possible.

What I did say is that It's not worth it, IMO, to just have one Unifi AP and no other Ubiquiti kit. Only exception is that, perhaps, if I literally only had one wireless AP in my network.

  • knock off or a brand name for $4 extra? Hmmmmm touch choice.

  • For the price go the tp link

    https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-Range-Wireless-Outdoor-Acc…

Grab it from Amazon and if it doesn’t work or you don’t like it, they have a great return policy

  • I'd recommend ubiquiti unifi. Here's one of their cheaper outdoor APs which I have used https://ubwh.com.au/Ubiquiti/UniFi-WiFi/UAP-AC-M $163.55 + postage
It will not extend your exisiting wifi though unless you're already running another unifi ap.

Be warned though everyone I know who has purchased a unifi ap has later upgraded the rest of their network

  • I have the ac pro and they are good. I run a controller but not sure it is needed apart from setup. I would not recommend the rest of the unifi gear, and I run a mostly unifi setup. The switches are overpriced for home and the USG/dream machine is missing important features.

  • cheers all. ended up going with the TP version.
