Can I Still Buy a Used Car through a Dealer during Stage 4 Restrictions in Victoria?

Hi,

Thinking of purchasing a used car.

I will need to hire a mechanic to do pre-purchase inspection, get a bank cheque and visit a VicRoads centre to do paper work.

Can I do all this during S4 restrictions in VIC?

Thanks!

  • EDIT: As someone mentioned below, I need a car to do groceries. I never owned a car in my life and only rented when I needed. I recently moved to a suburb (for cheaper rent due to reduced work hours and also the move was before the stage 4 started) with not so good public transport. However with everyone's comments I will delay the buying of the car.

Thank you all for responses.

    Why not. Spread the virus

    According to this - https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/stage-4-restrictions-covid-19

Only if you deem the car "necessary goods" and you don't go more than 5km away from your home at any point. Must also be done during the day, not during curfew. You must also go on your own.

Considering you didn’t say “I do not have a car and need a car to get to/from my permitted workplace or to shop for my essential items, therefore I must buy one”, it sounds like it’s a choice not a necessity. If so, then no you probably cannot.

Please, just wait 6 weeks. Otherwise if everyone “just does” their “small” things, it won’t be 6, it’ll be much longer.

I'm pretty sure those Audis are still being sold.

    • Quite like that comment. Not sure why the fun police negged you.

  • I believe they have already fined someone travelling across town for a car. Do you need it for work or for medical reasons. You only have 4 reasons to go out and definitely not during curfew. For everyone's sake stay home. It's not that hard. IMO

  • Yeahnah
now is not the time to go car shopping,

Hell why would you, second hand prices have gone through the roof!

  • This list : https://thenewdaily.com.au/finance/work/2020/08/03/stage-fou… gives a good guide to what is or isn't open. Under Retail - Onsite - it says "All closed unless listed". Car sales are not among the industries listed as being open. And under Wholesale they're specifically listed as being closed. You may be able to buy online but whether you can go and pick it up is another question entirely.

  • I am stuck in sort of a similar situation. I am in the process of buying a car from a private seller to replace my old car that was rear ended a month ago. I have just receive my insurance payout which mean I will have to return the rental car that I am currently driving. From my subjective point of view, I believe a car is essential for me to get the necessary good and services. My justification is that I believe that the car that I am buying is a replacement of my damage car and not an upgrade that I just decided to go ahead with during stage 4 restriction.

Alternatively, if anyone know of a delivery service of something like that. I am all ear.
