Trump bans US transactions with Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/aug/06/us-senate…

Donald Trump has issued a pair of executive orders that would ban any US transactions with the Chinese companies that own TikTok and WeChat (owned by Tencent), saying the US must take “aggressive action” in the interest of national security.

Executive orders issued late on Thursday would prohibit “any transaction by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States,” with the companies, beginning in 45 days.

What's OzBargain's opinion on the ban being issued?

Don't really care as not in the US and don't use either of the apps but surely, surely, SURELY, he has bigger things to worry about right now??

  • He actually forgot to ban sexy bigo bigo! Currently a massive time waster during COVID.

    • +1

I have no idea what a tik tok, Tencent or a bigo bigo is.

      Am I old hat?

I think it's like tic tac.

      • +1

Nah mate. Tic toc is basically audio visual clips that teens use to entertain. Tercent is a massive Chinese media company, and bigo is basically amateur strippers showing as much as possible without getting banned (oldies know them as ‘tarts’)

        • +1

So, tictoc for teens, Tencent for kids and bigo for adults.

Nvm, googled it and more stuff I don't know. Haha. (Last game I played was gtaV. Waited eagerly, played an hour on launch day).

  • Tiktok must be one of the most moronic things in recent history. Lol people doing silly dances omg you guize

i'm not even sure what that means, does that mean an outright ban on use or just making business monetary transactions?

what if you use wechat in australia to stay contact with people in the US and vise versa and not china.

    • From what I can see, it would be hard to ban use for people that have already downloaded it. Apple and google have 45 days to remove it from their stores and any updates/support would stop.

However it is easy enough for someone in the US to have a vpn on their phone and download/use. So essentially inneffective.

      • +1

Not totally, plenty of people have no idea what a VPN is or how to use one. It's a similar thing to the DNS poisoning used here to block torrent sites. Easy to bypass, but at least 50% of the population will have no idea how to bypass it.

        • +1

Do you think that 12-25 years old that are the majority of Tik-Tok users fall into the 50% that know what a VPN is, or the 50% that don't?

Sure a lot of people don't know, but most of the demographic that uses it do.

not sure about apple but for android you definitely don't need a VPN to install the apk directly, which is available on wechat's website and many other mirrors

i actually have play store disabled on my old phone because its such a resource hog, i install everything i need by just downloading the apk's and its just as easy

  • Sad day for xi jinping, the US cant have any competition in social media that they dont own running rampant

  • i thought Microsoft buying TikTok

    • +1

I guess they need to get deal done within 45 days.

  • What the national security that Trump is talking about? He doesn't even know what tiktok is. It's all a desperate political move to try and make news to get his approval ratings up before the election. See the youtube clip in the link below.

He might be an idiot, but banning TikTok seems like a no brainer for him. He gets his hard-on-China brownie points from his nationalist fans and tech giants, while also looking like he listens to advisors and security researchers. I hope we're next at this rate.

    • To him, China = Bad

  • These orders won't hold up in the USSC.

    Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Meh, China doesn't allow social media like Facebook and Twitter.

  • All these times I have been asking doctors regarding my little sister’s seizure-like symptoms, turns out she was just dancing around on this so-called “Ticktock” app. Please ban it in Australia too.

      Just because it's stupid doesn't mean it's dangerous :)

  • Interesting article about TikTok (and why it's not 'just another social platform' like youtube or facebook): Revealed: how TikTok censors videos that do not please Beijing

You can find similar revelations about WeChat.

  • The Chinese response was something else.
Something about corruption and blocking foreign companies. Do these guys realise that they block the ENTIRE INTERNET ?
you could probably argue that authoritarian governments are the definition of corruption.
