Ripoff Phone Deal - Domayne

My mother was having problems with their Nokia 5.1 plus. When I looked at it, it seemed like it need a new cable. After she went to JB hifi, it seemed like the port was more bent, after the sales person handled it. I advised that a port is $14 or could do a return with Nokia or JB. Anyway, today they got onto a sale that Domayne is doing. They ended up with a two year contract with Optus at $65/month for a demo model Iphone 8. I am assuming they had to pay $300 more to buy the phone and use the $500 giftcard. I suggested cancelling and returning the phone as it seems like a ripoff. The phone was around $640 new with Vodafone in May. They mentioned that the phone costs $1200 still. I think they were confused with the Iphone XR. If the phone is a bit expensive that's one thing, but to sell a demo model as well seems unreasonable. I am assuming the total cost for the phone is $1560 + $300. The store also has heaps of bad reviews for pressuring sales tactics. Update: The phone was missing things like the headphones + the contract sim… anyway returned for an iPhone SE

Well that's important is that your relative is happy with the deal.

    Stop looking at fixing other's.

      More a warning for others.

      • For what, telco's don't subsidise phones anymore. So essentially it's $65 a month for the plan which comes to $1560 over 2 years and they bought the phone outright for $300, which is reasonable for a iPhone 8.

Look on any telco's website, the device repayment is on top of the plan charges and basically means you are splitting the retail cost of the phone over the length of your plan. The benefits are that the device is unlocked and you can cancel your contracts easier.

        • it's a used/demo iphone 8 and I think they were confused about which model they were getting. I have found new Iphone Xr for $1049 from Apple.

          • @Cave Fire: Yea I get you, although used iphone 8's are just north of $300 so they didn't really get ripped off. Especially if it comes with an official warranty.

Warning; some people (who don't follow Ozbargain) pay more for things than they should.

    • Even Ozb followers do that too… LOL.
      Example ..$1k + phones.

  • they may be up for a hefty ETC fee.

  • How much data do they use that the need a $65 plan's worth of Data?

    • I doubt they would use 4gb in a month.

      • My mum is in same boat, paying $45/month for 40gb.

I put her on Aldi 1 year for $99.

        • Looking at Telstra as reception is bad where we are. Deal is interesting though…

          • @Cave Fire: Aldi mobile on Telstra infrastructure

            • @Melb69: Boost has a similar offering for I think $130 which is on full version of Telstra

They knew they could get your opinion but chose not to.
They seem impressed by their deal so let them be.
Many people do the same thing often and are oblivious to what they have done. Most times they don't want to know and can get offended if you try to help.
Row your own boat is what i have learnt to do.
If they realise later what they have done just say… you did not ask me.

    • My parent's do it all the time. They are adult's and it's their money. Sure I hate them getting ripped off or not getting a presumed better deal elsewhere. Not everyone has the time nor wants to bother looking for the cheapest deal. Otherwise they would be on here first researching. Let them be. I'm sure they are happy with their new Iphone.

    • yeah I'm not going to be too stressed about it. this isn't the first time they got dodgy deals from HN or other big box stores.

      • Did they fall for HN interest free deals. My parents have done that as well.

  • Damn that’s one hell of a ripoff, return if possible
