New Television, Budget of $5000 but So Many Options. Help Please?

Hi all.

Finally, for the first time, investing a bit of cash into a decent tv for the family. Currently have a 4yr old Hisense 55" tv so I am sure just about anything will be an upgrade. Prefer to deal with thegoodguys. Ideally 75"+ but happy to consider smaller if the quality is amazing. Mainly used for movies and gaming with the thought of getting the ps5 when it launches. As yet have not invested in any home theatre or sound bar as our youngest is only 3 ½ and dont want them playing with speakers so would be great for the default sound from the tv to be great. But hey if some good audio can fit into the $5k budget then trhats even better.

Not really sure what to be looking at as the sheer number of options now is a bit confusing. QLED, OLED, nano, Crystal UHD, QUHD..? I know OLED is great but what about the others? Are some of those just not worth even considering? Colour me confused.

Thank you in advance and any and all help greatly appreciated.

What are you watching / playing on the TV?
    What's the source?
How far do you sit from the TV?
Wall mounted or on a stand?
No TV has good sound. Put aside $500-$1000 for a half decent soundbar

    • Watching is just movies, no sport. Gaming is all sorts, still no sport.
Source is just streaming so Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video.
      Sitting 4 metres away.
Tv stand as we just got a new 2 metre long low lying tv unit.
Noticed some of the newer ones have Dolby Atmos sound as an advertised feature. Even thats no good?

      • +1

As for sound, no. Get a sound bar. You can even mount it above the tv to keep little hands away if need be.

      • Or if you have the room a basic AVR and 5.1 speaker HT package. Edit: Sorry just saw you weren’t in the market for speakers just yet. A sound bar with a wireless sub would be pretty good.

        • Totally agree re sound bar. Look at one of the less expensive Yamahas with wireless sub if you’re tight on cash.

  • I'd be looking at if a projector were an option, given your usage pattern, with the existing TV as a backup for the news, etc.

    • +1

Why? Projectors aren't really a popular option at the moment with the TV tech that is available.

      • Watching movies from 4m away.

The only way you are getting a 3m diagonal view is with a projector, and they are cheap in comparison to an OLED etc. - even if you do want 4K. OP already has a 55" as a backup for watching the news.

    • -1

Unless you always use it in a darkened room, projectors are rubbish even those upwards of $20,000. If OP is using it that way, you can spend more on the other components, screen/sound/media player, because in the mid-range between $300-$3000, there's not much difference between projectors.

No question the LG oleds. Especially if you’re going to be gaming. Unfortunately you won’t be able to get the 77 inside that budget. But the 65CX is an amazing tv and will only set you back around $3800 currently. So can save a bit in your budget and put towards the ps5 and either a good sound bar or towards a full surround system.

    • $3800 where? $4295 everywhere i have looked.

      • https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274442427236 $3825 after using PIX10 coupon. Just sign up to the free eBay plus trial to use it.

Also the same price at good guys commercial if you would prefer to buy from there. The appliances central deal is better though as it includes delivery.

        • They don't post to Regional NSW, how do you buy from good guys commercial? i do have a ABN.

Hear hear! I got a 55” C9 late last year, amazing TV. Looks great and the specs are solid.

WebOS also has most of the steaming apps OP wanted.

  • IMO once when you narrow down techn there aren't that many choices in Australia.

    Some options:

    • Sony X95G, 75, LED
    • Sony A8G or A9G 65, OLED
    • LG CX, 65, OLED

Sony and LG 75 OLEDs would be around 6k+

Not a fan of the 2019/2020 Samsungs. Personally wouldn't bother with QLED

Sound is subjective / about care factor I know some dudes spend 2x audio:visual.

Look up vincent on HDTVTest yt.

OLED for dark room / night viewing, QLED (high spec Samsung) for bright room. I'm an OLED fanboy but I'll still admit QLED are better for daytime performance.

Agree with 'dwhes' above, 65" is the better value proposition, spend the rest on home theatre, ideally something with a decent subwoofer.

    • What about a room that is light but can be dark if double doors/blind on 1 big window can be closed, what would you get? 5m x 5m seperate lounge room. Sitting 3.5m away was looking at 65" LG CX oled.

      • OLED. I have one in a lounge room that has a window behind the TV and in front of the TV. We keep the blinds down most of the time but even when they’re up the TV is watchable just not it’s best (reflections present). It’s fine for news and light entertainment. Anything that’s a drama or a movie you’d want the room a little darker to enjoy the deep blacks.

        • Thanks. Window is on right side and just wall behind TV, double doors are behind. Have a 55" now would really like a 75" but price.

          • @[Deactivated]: I went from 55" to 55" and am a bit disappointed I didn't get a 65".

            • @sween64: I did that last time definitely not this time.

        • How much height is there from cabinet top to bottom of screen? i have a sonos playbar that sits in front.

          • @[Deactivated]: Very little. 35mm or something. You can place the TV on top of a small piece of melamine that is the same colour as your TV unit to raise it.

            • @sween64: I would need 70mm as it is now with my Samsung 55"

    • Well given the room is a very large and bright room I think I may have to look at QLED. Room is 10m long and 5 1/2m wide with windows running down both long sides.

      • Yep probably. Check out the Q90T. They are close in the 'reflections' category but QLED hits coming up on double the 'HDR Real Scene Peak Brightness'
        https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q90t-qled
        https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/cx-oled

I recommended Sammy QLED to a mate, who had also seen my 65C9 OLED in person, and he's happy with his.

      • +4

Mate don’t go the Samsung. Given you’ll be spending the same amount of money for worse image quality and only 1 HDMI 2.1 port. Which means if you ever decide you want the series X as well, you won’t be able to play it at 4K/120. The LG has 4 2.1 ports. And if you’re really worried about reflections, some curtains for that particular room wouldn’t be much?

The OLEDs are fine in a bright room, it’s just true that the Samsung’s have much higher peak brightness due to being LED screens.

          soz i'll just piggyback here

LFA good all-rounder TV for movies, free2air, and (smooth) sports? coming from a 5+yr Panasonic.

me living room is also bright-ish.

          will an LG serve well?

          • @capslock janitor: Mate you’ll be blown away by the LG OLEDs. They are phenomenal for all types of media.

  • In response to Q70 suggested above, Not a bright panel on those mate, Q80T is probably the lowest Samsung you should be considering if you care about proper HDR.

I'm astounded by the amounts people spend on TVs these days. I'm not sure why…

    • Me in 1995: "$2K on a 64cm Sony Trinitron? No worries."

    • Me in 2020: "I want a 55inch TV with 5 year warranty for no more than $700, ok?"

  • +3

So far after everyone input will be looking at the LG 65" CX OLED and pairing it with an LG 3.1.2 Atmos soundbar. Smaller than I would have liked but it will give the full 4k@120hz for next gen consoles plus I havent found a bad review for the tv really.

    • +1

Yeah I will be doing the same.

    • -1

Atmos in a soundbar is a gimmick. Only get a soundbar if space saving / aesthetics are your primary motivator.

      • And yet plenty of Atmos Soundbasd review really bloody well so go figure.

        • +1

Surround sound. From a sound bar. If you fall for that you deserve it.

A motorbike can review well. And in some countries they fit 5 people on one. Doesn't mean its as good as a car for transporting 5 people, it just means it's good, for a motorbike.

Why am I bothering, you ignored my QLED advice above too. Good luck, I'll be sure not to waste my time helping you again.

  • Is it worth going with Harvey Norman and free delivery setup and wall mount? If you have a cabinet now with a blank wall behind where do all the leads go if wall mount? $4295.

    • Well wall behind is actually a large window with blinds so wall mount wouldnt work.

      • Was asking for myself lol.

For a $5k budget. Your title just says TV so I'm not including sound system for $5k.

If you prefer picture quality - Sony 65" OLED.
If you prefer size and have a light controlled environment - Sony or JVC projector. Screen size 110" or bigger, up to 160".
If you have a bit more cash: 77" OLED ~$8K - Sony or LG.
If you don't have a light controlled room and are happy with good picture then probably 86" LCD LED QLED, whatever acronyms they can make up to sell LCD TVs these days. Get one with Full Array Local Dimming (FALD). Probably something from Samsung or Sony for around $5k.

Personally I've got a Panasonic 65" OLED and a BenQ Projector on a 110" screen. I wouldn't buy another Benq projector, the picture quality isn't that good. Step up to a Sony or JVC projector if you can afford it.

If you are after some decent TV reviews then check out HDTVTest on YouTube.

Be careful with the Good Guys and JB Hifi. JB bought out The Good Guys a few years ago. These places are now as bad as each other. They try to sell whatever has the best markup and good warranty because this favours them, not the customer. Whenever I go in there all the best TVs are put out of sight on the lower shelves turned off and the stuff they want to flog is put at eye level. If you want some good advice visit one of the independent home theatre and hifi stores around town.

    Best of Luck.

  • You have to go OLED, and you have to go LG.
You skimped with your old TV, now you owe it to your eyes to experience the ultimate TV can offer.
    Look for LG C9

  • Whatever model you buy make sure it can be anchored securely - a three and a half year under kilos of a toppled TV is not a good thought.
Either wall mount it (my preference as it also avoids the sticky hands all over the screen) or anchor it securely to furniture that cannot topple forward.

  • Unpopular opinion but go for Samsung QLED Q95T, the picture quality is great and the one connect box is a very nice and underrated piece of tech. This has a very nice FALD and bright panel.
I do not like the fear of burn-in no matter what the marketing material says. I have seen the burn in first hand on a mates TV, makes a $7k TV look like cr@p.

  • Eh, you don't want a soundbar but you do want a 65" tv? You know how many countless TVs have been ruined by toddlers throwing at the very large surface area?
