Amplifier Recommendations for Turntable and PS4

Hey team,

I'm in the market for an amplifier but don't know where to start.

The main use will be for my turntable and PS4.

At the moment I'm using a Logitech Z550 with only two front speakers (Q Acoustics), a centre speaker (the stock Logitech one) and subwoofer (also Logitech).

An optical input will be needed as this is what's giving me sound for the PS4 which I use for games/Netflix.

Turntable uses stereo so only uses the two front speakers, not centre.

After looking up preferred amps for turntables, they always give back results for stereo amplifiers, though I'll need 5.1 as I'm using the centre speaker.

Bluetooth will also be handy.

I saw a more recent deal -https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/557597 but was thinking is this overkill?

Was also considering - https://www.harveynorman.com.au/yamaha-rxs602b-5-1-channel-s… as I like the slimmer design.

Hoping you can offer some suggestions :)

  • You’ll need an AVR with a phono stage of your turntable doesn’t already have one. A lot of higher end turntables do not.

I have a Yamaha RX-V685 which my Rega P3 plugs right into. I’ll eventually be adding a dedicated stereo amplifier and phono stage down the line, which the Yamaha AVR will work with as it also has a stereo line out.

    • Should've mentioned my turntable is a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, which has a built in pre-amp. This means I can plug it straight into an amp via RCA right?

      • +1

My understanding is that the Debut Carbon does not have a phono stage built in, so you will need a seperate one or an amp with one built in (such as the Yamaha I mentioned). You can get them from cheap ($50) to expensive so you don’t need to base your amplifier purchase on whether they have one or not; it’s just a convenience when they do.
