My Closest Auspost Parcel Lockers Are over 5km from Home

Hi guys,

I ordered several items from Aliexpress ages ago (before the current stage 4 lockdown) and got them sent to parcel lockers that are about 6km away from my house. Now they are starting to arrive, would I risk being fined to drive to the parcel lockers? If it's bad, what can I do?

Driving to the parcel lockers and picking up a parcel is minimal risk in terms of contracting the virus cuz I can time it so that I don't get in contact with anyone, but I don't know if I get pulled over by cops, how reasonable they are and whether they'd allow this.

Would love to hear about it if you have had similar experiences.

Thanks!

You could try ringing AusPost and see if they can redirect the mail to your house or a closer post office.

If I am not mistaken, you can redirect it to your home address via the online AusPost account.

    • I can't find a way to do it in either the browser or in the phone app.

I don't believe you can redirect them once it arrives at your parcel locker & you can only redirect "eligible" parcels. The closest thing to it being redirected is having the parcels taken to the nearest LPO/PO after 48 hours of them arriving at the OP's locker or maybe have them transferred.

OP's best bet is to contact AusPost and see if they can hold it, have it transferred to another PO/LPO or have it delivered to their house.

This has to be a troll

  • Well you can risk it or contact auspost and see if they can send it to your house.

I would say it's ok based on my common sense, I hope the police agree too. I think if you get stopped by police, do highlight that you are trying your best to avoid contact with another person (vs picking up from post office where you have to talk to a staff). Also emphasize that the orders were made before stage 4 lockdown, if you don't pickup the parcel within 48 hours, the parcel will have to be redirected to another post office which is increasing the workload of the strained AusPost.

From the DHHS website, under the section "Can I travel more than 5km from my home to collect a purchase?", it's stated "For some people the nearest essential goods and services will be more than 5km away. In this situation you may travel beyond 5km to the nearest provider."

Print the page and keep it in your glovebox. Show them when they ask you where you're going.

Just go pick up your stuff mate.

Sounds like the same people that do 90 in 100 km zone.

  • The cops really aren't going to pull a metre-ruler out and measure how far you are out of the 5km radius.

  • I was in the exact same scenario last week and simply went as usual to collect my parcel. Not my fault that I didn't foresee a 5 km restriction when I ordered. I thought if the cops give me a fine, I'll just kick up a stink with the media and it'll be withdrawn.

If you don't collect the parcel up in 2 (I think used to be 3) working days, then it will be transferred to the closest Australia Post outlet. This may be within the 5km of your home, or may be further away of course.

If you know the shop, then you'll be able to make a decision on this.

Just found this specific q+a on the DHHS website:

My mail is delivered to a post-box that is more than 5km from my house. Can I travel to collect my mail?

You can leave home to collect your mail from a post box or from a post office.
