A bit about Loake:

Loakes are an old English shoe brand, and make Goodyear Welted shoes which, other than being higher quality, allow your shoes to be re-soled time and again letting one pair of shoes to last literally decades, in true OzB style.

I would advise the collections 1880 and Shoemakers because they are from Englands, it looks like others are made in India?

Anyway, these are awesome shoes. I have been looking for GYW shoes but their price range is usually 450-800$ which I cannot afford.

Many of their shoes aren't Goodyear welted. The cheap ones in the clearance section ($129) definitely aren't

Goes against the title of the deal 🤔

You used to be able to get these (top end Loake 1880) from UK sites (Herring Shoes, Pediwear) for $200-300 shipped with VAT removed.

Then they got greedy, banned UK retailers from exporting and we are now stuck with inflated prices.

These are not worth the RRP nor the discounted price with 17% off. Stop ripping off Australian consumers.

Nothing to do with retailers or Loake being greedy and everything to do with Dick (head) Smith and Co, and the GST on imports. An agenda which was then pushed internationally by AU government agencies forcing retailers to open up AU based webstores to sell their goods (and pay a hefty chunk of tax to the government).

Not true. Although I disagree with the GST on imports below $1000 and greatly dislike Gerry Harvey and Dick Smith, it was imposed in July 2018.

Loake imposed export bans in early 2016, well before the GST change here in Australia.

And not just to Australia, but to other countries like NZ, Canada, US and Japan amongst others. They also imposed restrictions on online sellers to not sell their shoes at sale prices.

Shot themself in the foot if you ask me. Was a frequent buyer of this shoe brand, but haven't bought any Loake since these changes (and suspect I'm far from alone).

      • This was about loake and the franchise owner in Australia, not wanting uk shoe stores selling discounted loake products online to Australia. The ban was about protecting the middleman and the inflated price point. This was explained to me by loake and Herring.
Many companies do this Weber, Ralph Lauren.
Nothing stopping you using a freight forwarder, that’s what I do to circumvent these embargos.

If it was just a local franchise owner then doesn't explain why wasn't just Australia where the export restrictions were imposed - see countries listed above then add South Korea, Hong Kong, Chile and Russia.

I did use a freight forwarder when Debenhams UK had some run out, too good to refuse sale prices online.

Got a few pairs of 1880 range either side of about $200 (including freight forwarding cost).

Prior to the export restriction though I often used Herring and Pediwear (usually well below $300 delivered depending on exchange rate and whether on sale at the time).

Have enough pairs to last me quite a while, but probably would have still added about a pair a year if Loake hadn't effectively gutted their quality/price differential by backing the massively overpriced local resellers.

E.g. David Jones will try to charge $400 to 500 for a pair of Loake from their Design Collection Range (made in India) and don't even stock the UK made 1880 or Legacy. If you are going to spend >$500 there are better quality brands available that don't have export restrictions (and some incredible value for the quality when online stores like I mentioned above have sales).

Some of the best value would probably be when Herring Shoes have sales of their OEMs (labelled as Herring brand but made for them by Loake, Carlos Santos and other decent brands). Just look for the Country of Origin on the description and that is usually a pretty good guide to who the OEM maker was.

          • @opposablethumbs: Probably local licensee in each country.

We're sorry for any inconvenience that will be caused by the forthcoming change in our distribution. We've had a number of questions and comments about this, so here's a brief explanation of the thinking behind it.

We now export our shoes to many countries overseas and it's our aim is to make sure that everybody who buys our shoes enjoys the experience and gets the best possible service. To this end, we need to establish a network of retailers who are prepared to carry a good range of our shoes and also carry enough stock to provide the service, and we can only do this if we protect the interests of those distributors and retailers who are prepared to invest substantially in our brand.

  • Best to compare Loakes with Meermin, or Carmina for their discounted shoes. If you are looking to spend upwards of $400, then C&J would be my pick of the litter.

    • Gone are the days of 40% off $599 C&J in the herringbone sales :( C&J aint a $400+ shoe anymore - more like $700+. Glad I got some whilst they were "affordable".
edit: also agree with the above - screw you Loake for the export ban

For the price, I prefer Yanko or other shoes from Mallorca, Spain. I have a pair of Loake 1880, and the cut is slightly chunkier than Yanko. Yanko gets my $$ now.

Are yanko available in aus or you have to take a punt on size and order internationally?
