Bought car from Victoria (I am in SA) 2 days before Vic lockdown.

Hey guys, so we bought a car off some family friends in country Victoria. Does anyone know if we can still get cars across somehow with a permit of some kind?
Or will we just have to wait till the Vic lockdown ends to get it across? I've searched the Vic roads and SA transport websites but can't find anything as I guess it's a recent conundrum.

Thought I'd ask here before experiencing the fun of calling a government organization.

Apply for a travel permit and see what happens.

  • Dan Andrews mentioned contracts or situations similar to this would be honored with sufficient evidence given the notice and laws changing swiftly. Granted he was mainly referring to building contracts ect. Couldn't hurt to apply as it seems somewhat reasonable, try calling Vic roads if possible and get more clarity. If you get knocked back then you have your answer… wait.

Isnt the issue the SA side not Vic? I dont think Vic has limitations exiting, but SA border is closed - you'd have to find out from SA, but dont like his chances.

      • I'd wager you are very correct there in lies the difficulty int he return leg. I think Vic may have some movement restrictions once in the state but that's about all.

        • Thats how I see it..
There may even be issues once you enter Vic to drive to where the car is due to restrictions.

@pharkurnell: Yeah that was what I getting at, but I think that return to SA is the real pinch point unless can get some info from that state. Or just wait.

Maybe someone can drive the car to the border. Exit the vehicle and give it a bit of a push while in Neutral, so that the car makes it over the border without a person, and then the buyer can hop in before it runs away too far?

It's the only logical solution in our 'new' normal

make sure its streamed online ;)

      • Yes yes. Yes indeed. Esp the look on the Police's face as the car coasts in N a few meters before it is "caught" by the purchaser

    • To make it a bit safer, and we all like safety, the purchaser can throw a rope over to the seller so they can tie it to the tow point in the front, and that way the purchaser can pull their car to their side. This way, it is less likely for the police to categorise it as the vehicle not being in control. You only have to pull/push the car about 1 meter.

Initially, the nose of the car can be over the border but the door must remain in VIC. You just have to push it so that the door is now in SA. This all depends on how thin the "border" is. If its got a gap of a few meters, maybe 5 or so - then .. i'd suggest the rope.

    Use a car transport company.

  • Roadtrip, stop for no one
