Please Help with Set up Smarter Way

Hi guys,

I hope you all are doing well WFH. I got a questions about my desk setup.

This is my setup at home https://ibb.co/J3tqjKR

I want to make simpler if possible. What Kinda device I need to just switch between them. instead i manually change it. Ideally I want all the devices to go through the dock and then from the dock to the monitor.
I use lenovo usb c dock. https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/acc100348

Can I find a device that has input of Display ports and USB-C to USB-C. That way I can plug it directly to the dock and use the display port the output to the monitor. though currently got only one monitor.

Thanks for your time. I hope I make sense.

Edit: After this post, I did some research I think it's not possible without a KVM that can support multiple devices at same time. and switching between them.

If you're not using the Surface or the desktop to watch videos or gaming, you could use a remote desktop from the Lenovo.

    • I use RDP only to access specific files. However I do rely a lot on my desktop computer for editing.

  • The old days you had KVM's, it's been an age but this scenario looks warrantable.
Basically the KVM plugs into TV and the devices to the KVM and you select which input from it.
It has been a certifiable age since I've had to procure or use similar I'd be interested to see what others suggest.

The other option could be to setup one computer/laptop as the master rig/ admin machine and then access all others via RDP or similar remotely.

    • Old days? They are still pretty common. We use them at work, as we need to use separate machines for different tasks and my home monitor has one integrated so I can swap between my personal desktop and work laptop.

You can also pick up a USB switch, I have a U-green USB 3 switch from Amazon. Between that and my monitor I only have one button to press to have all peripherals working from whatever machine I am using at the time.

KVMs can get very pricey depending on how many things need to connect, but it's the only way to do what OP wants here.

      • You can get viritual KVM's that are pretty nifty for a lot of modern solutions… I think Synergy was one that I used back in the day.
I use term old days as in I don't do that I just use remote practices or containment for most things as I basically virtualize everything or do distributed computing. I get some people have set hardware for set task, I still do too and tend to use some sort of remote connections from my main rig or an admin laptop for such things.

  • Screen sharing with Win10? Wonder if an aspect of that could work here

  • What software do you use to make that chart

Is your goal not to have to change the monitor input via the physical button on the monitor? I assume you have a keyboard and mouse that supports multiple bluetooth connections so that's covered?

There is software like Nirsoft that may let you change monitor inputs via software. You could create a small shortcut for each input on each computer and switch inputs when clicked.

Thanks @Ryanek. Honestly I don't mind switching the monitor input via the physical button. Thanks for the share of that software that's available. I was more after how can I achieve my current setup by connecting all the devices via the dock and then from the dock to the monitor. I guess it's not possible it requires a special KVM switch.
