Newly released ebook for Japanese learners. I've looked through it and it appears to be well written.

How Japanese Short Stories for Beginners works:

  • Each chapter possesses a funny, interesting and/or thought-provoking story based on real-life situations, allowing you to learn a bit more about the Japanese culture.
  • Having trouble understanding Japanese characters? No problem – we provide you with the English translation below each paragraph, allowing you to fully grasp what you’re reading!
  • The summaries follow a synopsis in Japanese and in English of what you just read, both to review the lesson and for you to see if you understood what the tale was about. Use them if you’re having trouble.
  • At the end of those summaries, you will be provided with a list of the most relevant vocabulary from that chapter, as well as slang and sayings that you may not have understood at first glance! Do not get lost trying to understand or pronounce it all, either, as all of the vocabulary words are Romanized for your ease of learning!
  • Finally, you’ll be provided with a set of tricky questions in Japanese, allowing you the chance to prove that you learned something in the story. Whether it’s true or false, or if you’re doing the single answer questions, don’t worry if you don’t know the answer to any — we will provide them immediately after, but no cheating!

  • For a complete noob, can anyone recommend a (preferably affordable) course or audiobook to get me started in learning Japanese? Thanks!

Try one of these 49 free Udemy courses.

Try duolingo, it's free and pretty fun.

With Duolingo, I don't think your skills can progress very far

Source: I've been studying Japanese for 3 years and Duolingo has never been helpful

        However, everyone does learn differently!

They asked for a complete beginner course. It's perfect for a beginner and easy to use.

        • ya duolingo isnt great for japanese, i liked it for spanish as it was pretty easy to infer from english but japanese isn't as related so you dont really progress as quickly.
i used to hear good things about minna no nihongo for starting from scratch and a lot of people liked remembering the kanji or wanikani for kanji.

for people starting out without going to a class, learn hiragana with flashcards (check a vid on youtube for pronouncation) and reinforce it with one of the beginner textbooks. you can do it in a week or 2 and then never have to use romanji again. I run into a ton of beginners that cant pronounce stuff or read stuff and it makes it impossible to make proper progress. if you are aiming for the JLPT one of the content textbooks for that can help you focus your progress.

for what its worth i think this book looks pretty nice. A lot of stuff says its for beginners but isnt really. this has furigana, vocab list and a translation, so if you are a decent way through your first textbook you might enjoy trying it.

          • @bgbrendan: Can definitely second the romaji stuff, get rid of it as soon as you can. This will improve reading speed and helps pronunciation as well as you're not processing the romaji the same way you would with English words - it's a little odd but definitely is important

    • Thanks all. I'll check them out.

Check out the Japan Foundation https://jpf.org.au/ they often have good recommendations on courses and all things Japanese.

People mention DuoLingo but DuoLingo doesn't explain anything grammar wise. Try LingoDeer. Legit has grammar cards and stuff, really good! It also has a section explaining pronunciation and symbols etc. It was originally made to teach chinese/japanese/korean.

  • The furigana is next to the kanji in the online reader, making it difficult to read (at least for me). I'm unsure about on the actual kindle though.
