Wish i could play this on PC….

    • There are rumours created by fairly strong evidence that a PC version will come but Square Enix is maintaining no other version is coming for now.

      • Yeah Sony won't be too keen on that, so they'll have to keep it hush-hush for a while.

      • +1

i mis-read that as "rumours created by strong fairies"…

      • Sony has dibs on this for one year after its release, so perhaps April next year there may be a PC version. But no sooner

      • +1

they've already confirmed that the exclusivity period is for 1 year only then it will be on other platforms including PC and XB1.

    • There was a trailer post (around?) launch and it had "Running on PC" at the bottom of it

    • Get an used PS4.

      • $400ish everywhere, so unless you are desperate…

  • -2

I am waiting for this and Death Stranding to drop to $30. Do you guys think this will happen anytime soon? I notice most PS4 1st party games eventually get discounted to around this price.

  • +14

GOTY for me. Insanely good game - one of the best gaming experiences I've had in years. This is why we play video games

    • +2

Thought the same till the ending, still really enjoyed it though

      • I think the ending was intentionally created that way to create all the 'noises'.

    • +3

How much of that is nostalgia? I've never played a Final Fantasy so I'm curious how I'd find it.

      • if you have played FF7o before, you'll love this even more. if you never played FF7o, certain things may seem confusing (like a particular main character's reaction to events), because FF7r is not just a remake, it incorporates an additional theme which only makes sense if you've played FF7o. otherwise FF7r has modern controls and combat which would be easy to pick up even for players new to FF.
FF7o costs like ~$8 on steam when on sale, if you can wait get it first and your appreciation for FF7r will go through the roof.

        • +1

I loved the original but hated the remake, admittedly didn't get very far but the combat system completely ruined the fun for me. Very much prefer a turn based system. But I imagine I am in the minority with this view.

          • +1

@Mike88: did you try the classic mode then? it still isn't exactly turn based, but close enough.

            • @selphie: Heard classic mode turned the game to easy? I really enjoy playing difficult games and dislike the idea of dumbing the game down just because I prefer a different system.
I’m not worried about it though, I’m more than happy with the original masterpiece.

              • @Mike88: classic sets it to easy. It's a very tacked on mode.

The combat is mostly inoffensive, but there will be times when it is frustrating not being able to control everyone. Let's say there is a pool of poison on the floor, you want everyone to avoid it but the AI is too dumb and will ignore it. You can only control one character at a time. Even if you switch to an AI character to control them directly, you will lose control of your existing character who will then go and step into the pool.

Other times I wish I could just get everyone to block because I know a very damaging AOE attack from a boss is about to be unleashed, but I can only block on the active character. You cannot issue the AI to block without taking direct control, which would then mean your current character stops blocking…

Then there are occasions where I am trying to either build up a skill by using it, or try and unlock a trophy, and what I want to do is tell me team to back away and don't attack. I want to execute the moves or finisher, while the AI sits out. This is not possible in such a system. The AI will go and attack until its dead, ruining whatever you were trying to do. The only other way around this is to get them killed.

You also can't issue AI behaviors. For example, set a routine where anytime I am low, heal me. Or if you are low, heal yourself. If I am dead, revive me with a Phoenix down. If I am poisoned or asleep, cast Cure on me. Or attack the target I am attacking. The only way to get them to do what you want is to issue the command yourself, or assume direct control. This leads to a lot of micromanagement in battle. Previous games like 12 and 13 allowed you to customize the AI.

Finally, the AI builds up AI gauge a lot slower than you do. You pretty much can't rely on them, and have to assume control and then attack with their character if you want to build up their bar so you can command them. It would have been nice if they could build up bars themselves so I can stay on my character and just tell them to use special attacks or spells once their bar fills. But the game artificially forces you to frequently switch characters to build up ATB, and you lose the rhythm of what you were trying to do on your main character.

Basically, you gain added direct control of your character, but you lose the full control of all aspects of the battle that an ATB system allows. It's a big compromise, and honestly I found turn based less frustrating.

My other major complaint is this game is over the top. There are a ton more bosses than before and each one is 3 phases, and they last upwards of 15-20 minutes, where they used to be 1 or 2 minutes tops. It gets very exhausting, and you do very little damage to them. Playing this game felt fatiguing in ways the original never was.

      • +1

There may be some portions of the game that could be a little bit confusing (even for FF7 fans!?) but it's totally worth jumping in. IMO these sort of games hardly ever come along, so… don't read, don't watch anything else!! Dive straight in coz you'll be in for one heck of a ride. Be keen to hear what you think

For calibration, I really enjoy games with decent combat/gameplay systems like soulsborne series especially Sekiro. FF7R has a really fresh, fun, and engaging combat system which is super flashy to look at and enjoyable to get a handle on. The story, characters, and world is a bit Japanese anime-esque so you've gotta' be open to those sort of those sensibilities

      • +2

I bought it for nostalgia but ended up loving the game even more for some of the changes it made (helllooo honeybee inn). The ending is - as I am sure you have heard - very different. For me it was a mixed bag but overall won't stop me from buying the next installment as soon as it comes out.

Without spoiling anything, the game changes some of the original story content. Some old skool players got upset by this (thus the hate). I personally am willing to give it a chance to see how it plays out. Many of the changes they made (ie: more interaction with npcs, expanding districts, etc) were real improvements. They did so much right that I am willing to put aside my crusty nostalgia angst and see where they take it.

I would recommend FFVII Remake over any iteration of the FF series after FF10 (which was another brilliant game). At this price it is a steal.

Thanks OP! Perfect timing with the missus birthday

  • +5

Just checked, it's $59 at Big W so that with staff discount (thanks to the wife) get's it close to $50 for me. Thanks OP

  • +3
  • Nice but will wait for further low price. Gives me the chance to play some backlogged games haha

  • This has been the biggest let down of the year for me. Truly awful "game" - more of a string of cutscene cinematics with just the worst mini games I've ever played, and 20% of the original game. I can literally put the controller down and have a meal while "watching" this game with the sheer amount of cutscenes. The audacity to release 1/5 of the original game and sell it at full price is unbelievable.

End the game feeling absolutely unfulfilled and bored.Look for missing cats! Look for missing children! Circle the same area 20 times going back and forth! The horrible side quests are as long as the main storyline itself and felt absolutely there to "pad" the runtime.

Some newly introduced one-off side characters are completely over the top, as well as some of the voice acting of said side one-off characters. Game can't decide if it wants to be funny, cringey, action-packed, or emotional, and roller coasters between them all. One minute you're fighting a big boss, the literal next minute you're looking for flowers. What you end up feeling is absolutely nothing as it's fails to connect you with the characters and their emotions.

I will not be playing the 2nd installment. Seems like an insult to the original game at this point.

    • +2

the sole reason i did not decide to buy at least! I am waiting till it goes <$30 to buy it, knowing 3-5 parts are gonna add up to $90 - $150.
The only thing i wished i could get is the Steelcase to make a complete steelcase collection.

      • +1

I bought and played part 1, and if you are going to wait for all the parts to be released, it's going to take like 100+ hours from start to finish, no side quests, no grinding, no exploring.

All depends on your schedule i guess, but if you still have free time, I would probably try and get through this.

        • I don't mind getting it now and playing through Vol 1 so long the pricing is <$30. Knowing how much PS4 games drop over 1-2 years, I'd say i can wait. Plenty of other games to keep me busy in the mean time XD

and who knows when the next Vol 2 will be released. We might get a surprise lol

    • +9

As a super fan I couldn't disagree with you more!

    • +8

One of the best gameplay experiences I've had for a long while. The gameplay is really nuanced and you won't notice many of the little details until you get into Hard mode where you may die over and over again then you realise you should do this and that.

      • +5

I became fully obsessed with the mechanics whilst trying to do the Top Secrets battles. So good!

        • +2

It wasn't until Hard Hellhouse that I realised I didn't utilise a lot of things I had and I didn't play it "right". It took me 5 hours to beat that POS, but man that was so worth it.

      • +2

I wish the game somehow could've started with a Hard Mode type of thing… HM really makes u engage with the combat system and makes u realise how truly deep it is. It's got huge potential, can't wait to see how it evolves in Part 2

    • +3

I felt the same. Didn't feel there was any chance or actual point to leveling up characters and weapons, etc.

Very much directed to do this and that.

I did like some of the characters though but game felt way too short and obviously incomplete as it's just part 1.

      • +1

I'll stick to the original full game. This offers nothing above the original.

      • I also really disliked the summoning functionality.. seemed really weird

      • Very much directed to do this and that.

I can safely assume you didn't play the og FF7, otherwise you'd know it's a linear RPG. SE even tried to cater to kids / younger generations who prefer 'open-world' games and they got criticised by some og fans. Can't please them all. They'd probably be better of just remastering the og instead of remaking it but hey, haters gonna hate.

    • Sounds like you should just go and play Doom style kind of games rather than a well narrated, well designed game like this.

Feel the emotion, the conversation, the build up, and finally the new unknown instead just wanting to fight the tough enemy every second

      • +1

Actually, I dislike Doom, and much prefer RPG games and play alot of them. I love side quests when they're not forced or (extremely) boring. I also am a huge fan of the original. But I would not say this game is well narrated or well designed. The pacing of the game is all off, it really does feel like the first hour of the original game stretched out into 25-30 hours?

The emotions didn't stick, it felt unbelievable with no character development, Cloud is still the pouty tough guy soldier he started out with, unlike the original despite that having virtually no graphics or voice acting to speak of. The character I thought was developed the most was Jessie, which I enjoyed. The main storyline I felt was good, but short, and definitely marred by the terribly boring and forced side questing.

This is just my personal opinion, maybe it was the classic case of expectation vs reality. I squealed like a 5yo kid when I saw the remake trailer and I bought the game NOT knowing it was just part 1, so about 10 hours in, I started having a feeling something was wrong as the story had hardly progressed.

    • +3

Strongly disagree with almost everything in this comment. I put in around 90 hours into the game and loved almost every second of it. Hard mode is where it really shines as well, the combat is fantastic.

    • +1

      [Potential spoilers below]

Sorry, did we play the same game? Awesome recreation of Midgar, gorgeous realisation of the characters from the visuals to the acting/audio, completely new, fresh combat system, and don't get me started on the epic soundtrack

I enjoyed the side quests as it let players spend time w the characters and just live in everyday Midgar. They're pretty much all skippable anyway if you don't feel like doing them

Hmm donno' about you but I do enjoy a good 'roller coaster' of a game. Hence I also loved TLOU2

It's a true shame that a fan like yourself wasn't able to appreciate the love, care, and attention to detail by Square to lovingly recreate the world of FF7 and to try and capture that feeling we had when we were kids playing it for the first time. Oh well. I'm super hyped for the second instalment, coz FF7 is back in a huge way, with all new stake higher than ever before, the mystery, and the start of a fresh journey with characters we love

      • +1

I must be in the small minority! oh well! but as you said, I was really hoping to like this remake so badly! I do feel the shame as well :(

I might replay when they've released all the installments at one go, and skip the side quests next time! I am slightly put off by this whole installments / part one of X thing but I guess making a game like this must be really expensive..

There are whispers that Square may not even fully remake the 2nd and subsequent installments to the original so that'll be pretty exciting to see as well.

This remake made me wanna play the original once more.. think I have to find an emulator for it now..

        • Dude the original is readily accessible everywhere on pretty much all platforms for like ~$10, don't play on emulator… -_-. If anything get the PC version

There are indeed 'whispers' (I see what you did there)…

          [Spoilers below]

In case you're interested in understanding wtf just happened at the end of FF7R and haven't come across this Easy Allies video (long but so worth it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfgw7iDZ-bo&t It explains a lot and theorises what might be next… in other words, the second game is definitely not going to be quite like the original…

    • the game definitely feels very padded with filler. You could tell they were trying to stretch things out because their source content was 5 hours long and they had to turn it into 50 hours. The game could have used some editing. About 15 hours of fat could have been trimmed to make it a better game, and yes those side quests are extremely unimaginative and a chore to do.

I felt this game did not respect my time, and it had quantity over quality written all over it.

I didn't hate the game but it was a huge letdown.

  • +5

buy this game it is brilliant

  • +6

Part 1 of 7, I'll wait for the complete ed. to be this price or lower thanks. See you all in 2026

    • +7

Yep, see you in 2026 when part 2 comes out.

      • Me too brah. I'm also waiting for all the Marvel movies to run its course before I start watching any of them

        • +1

I'm also waiting for all the Final Fantasy games to be made before I play Final Fantasy 1?

    • +1

I'm on the same boat. I'd rather wait for the 7 discs "Playstation Hit" version

  • +4

Incredible game. As a huge huge fan of the original (I really do feel that it has made an impact on me as a person) - they absolutely nailed this one.

Can't wait to replay this on PC

    • +3

      Go away troll

      • -3

It's terrible, i've played it. Don't understand how anyone likes it. Honest Opinion, not trolling.

    • Even worser than Shaq Fu?

      • Yo, don't embarrass him like that. Shaq Fu is his favourite game of all time. Lmao.

  • +2

Amazing game. I spent just over 50hrs on it. Game play / team fight strategy is one of the best I've experienced. Looking forward to the next parts.
I've never played the original and yet I still enjoyed it very much.

    • +2

I am on 80 hours and still going…..lol

      • +1

you must be doing all the side quests and everything in between! I've done all the side quests, but didn't bother with some of the other minor challenges. I want to get the silver trophy's so I will revisit again someday

        • +3

Yeap! Absolutely everything and I still can’t win with Tifa on the Pull Ups…….:

BY THE WAY HELL HOUSE ON HARD IS BLOODY HARD!!!!!

    • I got the platinum after about 80 hours!

  • +1

Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 1. Have fun in Midgar and absolutely nowhere else. Dont waste your money.

    • +12

I know right, I can't believe TLOU2 was also just set in Seattle pretty much and no where else. And don't get me started on Persona 5, Japan only? WTF. Holy sht also Metal Gear Solid on the PS1, the entire game is only on Shadow Moses island? Amirite??

      • +1

U guys should play resident evil 7 biohazard

      • Why dont you compare it to I dont know Final Fantasy 7 or any other Final Fantasy game for direct comparison. Instead of passive aggressive and silly disingenuous comparison to complete different games that still dwarf it in scope.

      • Seatle and Japan are bigger than Midgar. You only get to see a small fraction of Midgar at that.

        • -1

Are you trolling or are you dense in that you don't understand the point. Lol "Seattle and Japan are bigger" wtf r u talking about dude. Let's use some basic meaningful metrics: compare the square footage between the games / i.e. how much do you actually traverse in the game (i.e. world map size). Midgar's playable area including bike gameplay is vastly larger than both of those games combined. To be clear, my original point is to counter the idiotic point from wanderlei who seem to think setting up strawman garbage bottom-barrel arguments is somehow helpful for would-be buyers on these forums

Let's do that then Wanderlei. Let's compare it to say one of the greatest FFs, FF6. You know to traverse from one end of the world map to the other on a player-movement (no mount) basis is like ~2 minutes right? To go thru an entire villages and towns and locales takes 1 minute and it's 2D sprites and comparatively extremely low fidelity and honestly not even usefully comparable. Grow a brain mate

          • @tarutso:

If anyone's dense it's you, first for comparing a 2020 game to a 1997 game in size as if standards were the same. Second, everything you said about Midgar applies to Seattle.

Seattle is the one city on an entire earth. Just as Midgar is one city on their world. However, the original game was set on an entire globe and all you're getting in the remake is one city from that. TLOU was never a globe trotter. So using TLOU as justification to only include one city is inane.

And yes, you only get to see a small fraction of the actual Midgar.

Let's do that then Wanderlei. Let's compare it to say one of the greatest FFs, FF6. Obviously you don't understand what 25 years does to an industry.

            • +1

@lostn: Lol dude thank you you are proving my points in my initial reply sighs I give up

Edit: actually let me be super ultra clear in case you reply with something that wastes everyone's time:

You first said: "If anyone's dense it's you, first for comparing a 2020 game to a 1997 game in size as if standards were the same…" (totally agree with you here)
You then said right after: "However, the original game was set on an entire globe and all you're getting in the remake is one city from that." (sighs I give up)
Lastly you said: "And yes, you only get to see a small fraction of the actual Midgar." (really? you think that's decent point? Which game apart from say Flight Simulator lets you traverse proper complete cities in their entirety; think before u comment)

    • Resident Evil 7, in a mansion only.

One of the best games this generation!

      • it's a shorter game. You're not meant to go globe trotting.

  • +1

The combat is really fun, but the rest of the game was okay at best.

They said the story would be really fleshed out but honestly you can really feel that it's just the first hour of the original game (pacing is just plain awful).

I'd probably wait for a sub-$40 price, but if you really want to check it out then this is still a decent price.

    • It's an average game. Just the FF fans praising it all over.

      That's no replay value

      • +1

FF7R has hard mode / NG+ and secret bosses… does P5 have replay value? I finished it with max confidants on first play thru, where is the replay value there?

  • I have zero interest in playing this until PS5 is out, I'm hoping they release a patch that can take advantage of the new hardware, only a couple of months to wait!

  • +1

I'm waiting for it to drop more……..$29 please

I don't mind waiting til next year because for a fact i know Part 2 will not come out probably til end of next year or longer.

Plus I got so much backlog anyway

To be honest is only for nostalgic reasons. I tried the demo it wasn't that good.

They have lost the plot, Persona is the way to go with any turn based strategy. This is an action game pretend to be turn based

    • The combat in FF7R definitely can put some players off. Especially those who were expecting something less intense and less real-time. Suggest you play Classic Mode as it essentially becomes turn based but it's a bit too easy. Once you actually grapple with the system it's actually quite elegant and really fun when you get the hang of it

Re demo. Not sure what other games' demos or early hours are as engaging as FF7R… would love for u to list some

      • I think my expectations was too high. I actually didn't feel or care about further into the story after the demo. After fighting the spider looking boss I was like yeah so that's it.

        I was a FF fan from 7 to 12.

I actually played the Crisis core on psp as well and that was amazing.

FF7R didn't give me the same wow factor for some odd reason. Perhaps it's too much like FFVX just with a Shinra setting and better characters.

It didn't feel like a turn base at all. It's like Devil May Cry FFVX graphics and lacks the turn based that we all loved.

There are many better Jrpg titles such as dragon quest XI, Fire emblem three houses, Persona 5 royal, Tales series. They all replace the good old Squaresoft games we loved.

        • Re FF7R story. If you've played FF7 then you'll know the gist of the story. But without spoiling… they change things up quite dramatically. Like you I loved FF from VI to XI (holy shit XI was so epic altho MMO), but subsequent FFs have just not done it for me. FF7R is prob the best in the series since Xl, IMO.

"FF7R didn't give me the same wow factor for some odd reason. Perhaps it's too much like FFVX just with a Shinra setting and better characters." —- I honestly don't think this is a fair comparison. FFXV pales in comparison to FF7R by 'a lot'. For example, the characters are far better written and realised than FFXV. While retaining that anime-esque style, they actually FEEL like actual characters without insanely stilted/delayed dialogue that FF since X has always struggled with until now

Lastly, the combat in FF7R is really unique and is not just like an action combat game. Trust me, I fking love action combat games like DMC, soulsborne, Sekiro, more recently Ghost. FF7R's combat is actually really tactical and is a smart blend between action and turn-based. The game doesn't explain things very well tbh especially the demo but to be fair they're introducing a lot of concepts at once. I found that in the early parts of the game I wasn't thrilled by the combat, but once I knew how it worked (e.g. exploiting enemy weaknesses, having proper team/materia setup) it became so much fun

Based on your preference tho re JRPGs it seems that you were looking for more turn-based? I've played those games except Tales so I'd suggest start in Classic mode and see how you go. Anyway just my 2c, highly suggest you don't skip on this one

  • Game wasnt bad. Ending was bat shit insane rubbish.

  • For those subscribed, it's now $58
