Replacement Android Phone for Samsung Galaxy S5

Parents have old Smasung Galaxy s5. Screen is staring to come apart from the phone. Looking to get a replacement similar but not to expensive android phone for them. One they can use there existing Aldi sim on.

Having not looked at Mobile phones for a while. So not sure what to look at in the lower end range. What you recommend?

    Samsung Galaxy S20+ Ultra

  • Need a bit more info. What's your budget? How old are they? Are they good with technology? Do they use it a lot or a little? Do they use apps or just messages and calls? They have a preference for Samsung?

Without knowing too much, I would say the Samsung A51 or A71 is a good pick. It's a good price point between being garbage tier and top tier. It's an easy step coming from the S5 with no real learning curve to speak of if they are used to Samsung already.

    • Although I agree with your recommendation:
      - Their age is irrelevant
      - They have been using a mobile to the extent that it needs replacement, so their level of technology knowledge/use is sufficient for mobile phone use

Not really. Phone probably just showing its age. Since its is almost 5 years old. Was thinking something like around $250 budget.

They don't use it that often but mainly for apps, limited calls and texts.

  • When do they need to switch? If they can wait until September, then the Pixel 4a is a pretty good deal.

  • S9+

    Cheaper phones and still decent

His budget was stated in a comment after my comment??

  • Samsung Galaxy A-series or Xiaomi Redmi Note series, whichever grade fits the budget, are good choices.

Huawei P40 Lite should be good too. My dad has a P30 Lite from last year and he swears by it (moved from a Xiaomi).

p.s. Bear in mind the S5 likely has stronger build than the budget models. Keep this in mind if your parents tend to drop their phones a lot.

  • Have a look at this poll, not much you can get with a $250 budget that is comparable to the S5 when it was new
