Extending laptop screen across 2 monitor

HI guys, I have been doing internet searches for this without much success.

I have a laptop, no USB-c, one HDMI. Is there a way to extend the display across 2 monitors? (either 3 including the laptop screen or just across 2 monitors)

the latop is a i7-6x with GTX960m. An oldie.

What you need is a USB to DVI (If you are limited to USB2.0, yours being an old laptop) adapter or even better USB to HDMI adapter if your laptop supports USB3.0.
These won't give you high refresh rates or g-sync/freesync support but will be perfectly fine for productivity and entertainment.

    • anything after 3rd gen (including) has USB 3.0

You can only connect to one monitor via HDMI. You could get a USB adapter but they aren't very good, slow response and some compression/decompression artifacts. It's probably acceptable for documents, general browsing but I wouldn't use it for things like videos

    • I been using usb 3.0 display adapter (which is USB to VGA) and its now been more than a year and I don't have any issue with slow response or anything. I am using this with my laptop to connect 3 monitors as my laptop have 1 HDMI, 1 USB-C, and so with this adapter I have connected another monitor. This USB adapter I bought from ebay.

      • It's been a while since I looked into USB adapters, maybe the quality has improved since I last checked

Yes you are right, when I first bought USB adapter 3 years back , I know it was virtually useless as the mouse just freezes a lot when you try to do anything and it was USB 2.0 and now as it is USB3.0 so it is far way better now.

  • Is your computer compatible with a usb hub/dock which can take a usb in and output to 2 hdmi ports?

Similar to what IBM/Lenovo do and HP with their commercial products. is how we output to 2+ displays.

You need a Monitor or Dock or Adapter with what is called Display Link. Work shipped us all monitors for the WFH period and they are HP with Display link so I'm running one monitor (my own) via HDMI and the other via USB Displaylink. The monitor also works as a USB Hub and has a power pass-through for laptop charging. HTH.

  • I'm currently using a set up right now that uses a basic USB connection out of the laptop into a hub that has two monitor outputs. Works very simply to give me a total of three screens once the laptop screen itself is included.

  • In short it can be done, with docking stations; however just weary which one you get

    -USB Type C
    -USB 3.0 (https://www.centrecom.com.au/dell-d3100-uhd-4k-usb30-port-re…)

Before buying, consider how you will plug your screens in. Display Port/HDMI/VGA/DVI? Not all docking stations have 2 VGA outputs.

  • Thanks guys. I know what to look for now.
