Oculus Quest Worth It or Wait for The New One ?

Hi
Thinking about getting the Oculus Quest. I am not a gamer but I tried it last year and have been thinking about it.
Tempted to get the $799 one on Amazon.
My question is: Should I buy this instead of waiting for the new one as a new one has not come for a while.
Also, if you bought it did you get anything else like the travel case, silicone case cover etc and what games do you play please?
Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Looks like the next one is going to be announced imminently (some leaks already).

From what's been shown, it looks like the display will be improved, the headset will be lighter, and chances are it'll be the same price - possibly cheaper.

I'd wait - coming from someone else sitting on the fence.

    • When do you think we would know ? Is their normal announcement in September ?

      • Hard to say. There have been a lot of solid leaks of near-final hardware.

I think the main thing is, it'll probably be another couple of years before the next Quest after this.

So if you hold on a bit longer, you'll either get the latest hardware for much the same price, or be able to pick up a dirt cheap Quest 1 secondhand / clearance.

  • Join the Facebook groups for ideas on games and accessories.

I’d buy one, and did. It’s great fun right now and there’s no reason to delay because the specs and date of the new one are completely and utterly unknown.

The games are super fun and the graphics really don’t matter, they’re so immersive. Besides you can use Link or Virtual Desktop to play from your PC if you want.

  • The Oculus Connect conference is in late September (last year it was the 25th-26th). It's likely that the new Quest will be announced then. General availability will be harder to predict, but I'd assume they wouldn't launch too long after that. It's hard to say whether this is worth waiting for as the leaks haven't really shown anything with regards to the specifications.

In terms of accessories, I bought the travel case and these for lens protection: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07LG5Q3LY/
I also bought a USB 3.1 cable and active extension cable for Oculus Link to connect the Quest to a PC to play PC VR games (though you can use the included charging cable or buy the Oculus Link cable as well).

  • So confused now lol

  • I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are. FB is probably going to announce the new Quest in September but it may take a while before the actual release date imo. The original Quest was announced in September 2018 but it wasn't until mid May 2019 that headset was released.

Personally I think I'll wait for the 64gb version to be in stock again on Amazon AU and get that. Kinda tempted to get the 64gb from Amazon US but a bit worried about warranty.

  • I got the $800 one on Amazon - I probably could have gone the cheaper one.

I have played it a lot - mostly Beat Saber with mods. I also have Virtual Desktop and stream games from Steam to it which is cool, but doesn't really get used much due to Beat Saber.

I'd say at this point maybe hold off as there are rumours of a new one - there might then be price drops, but who knows!

  • If you do decide to get the quest, don't bother with the 128gb one, just grab the 64 for $622

The only way you'd fill a 128 is with 3d movies and HQ files (or thousands of Beat saber songs). Games are quite small.

  • I'm in the same situation, to wait or buy now. However, I do already have a HP Reverb for sit down PC gaming.

I was on the verge of buying the 64GB Quest at $649 RRP but decided to wait because the new version announcement is only a month away. If it were say 6 months away, then I would've bought the current model Quest. But for the sake of a month and potentially better (hopefully) and lighter unit, the month is worth the wait. I wouldn't imagine that the current Quest would go up in price or anything upon information of the new version, unless the current is somehow far superior.

  • Wait for the new quest just because of the weight reduction alone. I would recommend you get plano/ prescription lens for any brand of vr headset you decide to get.

Unpopular opinion but I would wait for another reason, I don't believe the hardware is where it needs to be yet. I returned my Rift S after a few days as I found it lackluster. I was running it on a 2070 Super and was really disappointed in the quality of visuals. I'll be getting a 3080ti and will give the next gen of headsets another go then.

  • i bought the quest,

it all comes down to if have money for the upgrade vs having one now.

    Now
    get to play it now
know what the price will be
new controllers will be avalible later

    Later
the new one will be over 1000AUD
    higher frame rate
    new controllers come with it

the main ideas is it is like the DS vs the DS Lite
    the DS was great
the DS was great + 2

it is not to replace the quest but rather to have a quest.2

    • I'd say it's more like DS to 3DS as it's not a smaller form but rather a tech update.

      • well 3DS has software that wont run on the DS, all of the quest and quest 2 things are compatible, so not a good comparison

        • You're right, perhaps Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20. Nobody wants the previous iteration unless it's half price as it's old hat.
