Toyota Corolla Radio - Entered Wrong Code 10 Times

I have a 2010 toyota corolla and I disconnected the battery. The radio needed to have the correct unlock code entered.
I entered the wrong code "10 times" and it has been dealer locked (the display says, "Contact dealer").
The normal unlock code is the last 3 digits of the cars vin number - however, this radio was removed from another car so I had the wrong vin - I have now got the correct vin.
The radio "Does not" have the glass display.
I cant enter it now anymore and need the dealer code or procedure to override the dealer lockout.

    Why shout?

    What is the actual question?

    CAPS LOCK

    • +11

Yep. The code should have been without caps lock on.

It will probably be cheaper to just get a replacement stereo from Supercheap and have it installed.

I would like to applaud the OP's positive mindset to have the same number rejected 9 times and believe the tenth time would be successful.

Maybe if you didn't have your CAPS LOCK stuck on, the code might have worked the first 9 times.

Why didn't you stop entering the code!? Too bad, its dealer locked, cough up the money and they will unlock it for you.

  • I thought the pin is on the headunit or the manual?

    • +2

Whats the point of putting the pin ON the headunit (from the factory)? Steal the headunit, and you have the pin. So might as well not bother!

Pin codes are old school when people use to steal head units out of cars. So to stop that, they put a pin requirement in after a power cut. It was sometimes linked to the VIN numbers, sometimes random. But normally came with a little card with it on.

As stated "need the dealer code or procedure to override the dealer lockout."
The code is the last 3 numbers of the Vin. - I have them now - just need the dealer lockout overide procedure ??
    For all the Einstein's that commented - I tried different combinations throughout 111 222 333 444 555 000 123 321 101 010.
Was not aware there was a 10 try permanent lockout - obviously not Einstein.
If this is a sample of the answers I can expect from the forum - well ????

Well.. you're the genius that locked the unit.. surely you can figure it out yourself… /s

WARNING: If you enter the code incorrectly 10 times, you will permanently lock the radio ("HELP" is displayed on screen) — when this happens, you'll need to contact your Toyota dealer for assistance.

If you end up with the 'help' message and the red key displayed you can press "1, 4 ,6 and the power button " simultaneously , this will allow you to enter a code again

Alternately try contacting the resident Toyota expert directly

    • The code is the last 3 numbers of the Vin. - I have them now - just need the dealer lockout overide procedure ??

Yes you do, you need the dealer code now, it won't be generic one, but one based on the serial number/VIN etc and they normally won't give it out for 'free', but it does depend.

Was not aware there was a 10 try permanent lockout - obviously not Einstein.

Why not stop after 5 times if the same code didn't work?

  • you will probably have to contact the manufacturer of the radio to get it,the dealer may have a copy of it but the manufacturer is the one that sets the original code the dealer only has a copy of it,so after it has locked you out good luck,if you have the right code now try disconnecting the battery again then reconnect it then try the original code again,if no luck look around (Ebay-Gumtree) and see if you can buy another radio and remember ask them to include the code with it,you can also try the wrecking yards,

  • Toyota head units (made by Denso/Fujitsu Ten) will brick if they have the incorrect code entered too many times. All Toyota dealer service departments have a yellow box supplied by Denso Ten which will unbrick the head unit. There is a charge for this, as the dealer is charged by Denso Ten for a specific number of unbricks on the box, which has a countdown display each time it's used.

    3 options, OP;

    • Take it into Toyota and get them to unlock it
    • Buy/fit a newer Toyota head unit off Scumtree, MP or whatever
    • Fit an aftermarket head unit

Personally I'd go for the last option and fit something with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to your vehicle. Bring it up to 2020 standards.
