Mastercard 2.8% vs Visa 1.5% Surcharge

I have seen the above differences in surcharges three times in two days. This was at accomodation and at a restaurant.

I have been under a rock lately in order to avoid anything news/online/socials. Have I missed anything fundemental in credit card purchases? I have looked online and cant find any information.

Thanks in advance

That's a rip, especially the MC one.

We pay the same fee for Visa and Master transactions, both of those are a lot higher than they should be.

  • Thank you for your responses. I guess I will have to pay with cash more than before.

CBA merchant facility MC / VC the same for small business about 1.65%. Diners & Amex are different rates.

As long as there is an option to pay by cash that is OK.

    • Get with the times grandpa, people want to get enslaved by online transaction fees nowadays!

Now it's only less than 3% - once majority of purchases with cash will be banned by AusGov (they will say it's for your own safety and to reduce the "shadow" economy, as if criminals would follow these limitations LMAO) these fees will jump up to 10%-20% because you can't pay by evil cash!

Tho yes I agree, as long as I can pay with cash I don't care - when eating out I always bring cash so I don't get stung by those stupid "fees"!

    • Absolutely. If a merchant insists on or "strongly advises" the use of credit cards due to Coronavirus concerns, they lose the right to charge a surcharge at all. Each and every one of them needs to be called out on this.

  • Pay cash, Visa is more global I think, only MC I have is from CBA
