Changing currency AUD to NZD

Hi

I was heading to NZ for holidays and just wanted to if anyone knows what is the best way to exchange AUD to NZD? Would I get better rates if I do it in Australia or should I get it exchanged in NZ?

Any pointers would be great. Thanks in advance for your assistance :)

  • When I travel to NZ I usually change only a couple of hundred @ the bank, and use my 28 degrees card (decent conversion rate, and no conversion fee) for every place that accepts credit cards.

  • Thanks for your reply h4lcyon. I will sure apply the 28 degrees card for future travel as I wont be able to get the card before I leave for NZ- seems like a good thing to have!

    • Fair enough, it's also a great card to have linked to your PayPal & for overseas online purchases so you don't have to fork out for PayPal's rip off rates.

Otherwise like Chongy said you will probably get a better rate when there (as long as it's not at the airport ;)

  • Personally i always find the conversion rate best at the country you are travelling to as long as they dont require a conversion fee. even when i was in NZ i got more bang from my buck that my friends who brought up in aust.

Try the Post Office - when I go to NZ I take my 28 Degrees card, but I also go to the Post Office for $200 or so beforehand for just-in-cases (which can come in handy some times as last time I got there and picked up a rental car, I had to pay NZ$25 to leave the airport car park which they didn't inform me of! But also helps if you need to catch buses, taxis etc when you arrive.) Found the Post Office to be better rates than the banks and no commission, as well as you can pick it up generally the next day. In your situation, I'd highly recommend the Post Office. Hope this helps :)

I'm in Melbourne & have NZD left over from a trip there a few years ago..

I'd be happy to sell them to you at a good rate if you're keen - face to face
