Buying lens, should i wait til Christmas?

hey guys
i got my canon 60d couple months back and thinking of upgrading my lens, never kept my eyes on lens before so would like some suggestions, should i buy them now from DWI or should i wait til Christmas? would there be a big drop in the price?
anyways i'm gonna travel overseas (China and Japan with my gf) end of Nov, so lots of portrait and landscape shots. Been googling for a couple days now, my budget is $600. Should i just get Sigma 50mm f1.4 (~$450) or Sigma 10-20mm f4.0-5.6 (~$450) + Canon 50mm f1.8 (~$95)
The current lens i'm using is 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
ppl from whirlpool suggested me to get tamron 17-50mm f2.8, so another option, should i get tamron 17-50mm + sigma 10-20mm or + a prime lens canon 50mm f1.8
would like to head some suggestions :) any help would be appreciated

  • Hi will_nn,

i can't help you with your question sorry, but can you let me know what good sites are there to explain what each len is most ideal for? i too just brought a new slr (nikon d5100) and realised that the stock len is pretty limited.. so would like to understand what each type of lens does.
oh and if anyone has any preference on the best place to get a good price on lens that would be great!

    cheers!

  • Coincidentally, I have the tamron and I'm in Japan atm. In my opinion you need a longer focal length for portraits, but for just general travel photography and landscapes its great. However I'd definitely be getting a zoom lens for travel and not a prime lens, sigma 17-70 or canon 15-85 would be ideal.

If not, the tamron + 50mm f1.8 would be a nice budget choice.

As for prices, don't expect places like DWI to drop in price.

Other thing to consider is if you really want to be lugging that around on your travels. Depending on how much actual traveling you're doing within the countries you may be better off with just a point and shoot, unless of course you're an avid photographer.

Hope that helps, though I'm no expert.

  • i think, if you can afford it, buy canon 24-105L f4. remember you have to multiply focal length by 1.6, so the wide end becomes 38.4 which is not very wide, but the other end becomes 168mm. depends what you want to photograph. amazing professional lens, (costs about 20 times the 18-55.) kogan has it for $1395.

changing lenses is a big pain, so i would not recommend a prime lens. don't think lens prices change much.

  • i think you no need to wait that time, it is too long time to wait

  • recommend whirlpool forums

    i ahve a 450D and 7D

previous got the 50 f1.4 canon
    (similar to sigma one)
the quality is great, very sharp

however the length was just too long on a crop
use ur current lens and leave it on 50mm and take some photo's for a day
when ur in the bush or outside like at te beach is fine
take it to a city or inside and u'll see the limitations, u have to stand too far back to take photo's
great for portraits but when ur on holidays u dont want to just see the the person
u want some of the background

look into the tamron 17-50mm f2.8
i got the canon version and its great

missing some ultra zoom, but the only time i want that is at sports or zoo
and i dont go that much

    my recommendation would be
tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for everyday shots
if ya want some nicer porttraits and low light shots
    teh canon 50mm f1.8

  • depends what you shoot, but tamron 2.8 17-50 is a good allrounder.

wide angle lens are quite limited in their applications really, and distort at the wider end.
